Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir/ Madam,
I hope this email finds you well.
I am writing with regards to an article which I came across your Travel Times Magazine and it had mentioned some misguided information about about the history of our town. I would like to bring it to your attention so that it can be corrected.
I would like to kindly request to correct the facts on the statistics and demographics of the visitors in our town that visited in our town in the year 2026. Also, it contains information on the crime ratio and human trafficing in our city that we stand at the first position in crime related issues, which is completely false and needs to be immedietely updated.
Times of India manazine is an old and preffered magazine and people love reading form it as it is very informative and contains facts in detail. But the information about our town mention is completely false and we dont want people and other tourist to make a wrong impression about out town. Also, it would affect the level of touriusm in our town which would ultimately affect the small businessess who rely on the tourist that visit our town .
I would firstly request the the editor to collect back all the copies of the magazines and stop the sale of the new magazines in they have already dispatched a new consignment in the market. In addition, I would requet the editors and the writers of the magazine to consult the mayor and the counsillors of our town in order to know the actual facts to make changes in the new copies.
I hope that my request would be considered.
Your faithfully,
Sankalp Diwate.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, successfully covering the core requirements. You have corrected the false information regarding statistics, demographics, and the crime ratio, explained why it is important for the magazine to give accurate information to protect local businesses and prevent misunderstandings, and suggested practical steps the magazine should take, such as recalling copies and consulting the mayor. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or repetitive, particularly the explanation of the economic impact on tourism and local businesses. To reach a higher level, you could have elaborated more specifically on the exact nature of the demographic errors or proposed a public retraction in the next issue alongside the recall.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure from the opening statement to the closing requests. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the different points of the task, such as the corrections, the reasons for accuracy, and the suggested actions. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or repetitive, relying heavily on transitional phrases like 'Also' and 'In addition' to link sentences and paragraphs. Referencing is occasionally slightly unclear, for instance when shifting between pronouns referring to the town and the magazine. Clearer progression and smoother transitions between ideas would enhance the overall flow and elevate the cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a formal complaint letter, attempting some less common items such as 'demographics', 'consignment', and 'unfavorable impression'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that prevent a higher score. For example, 'misguided' is used instead of 'misleading' or 'incorrect', 'human trafficing' contains a spelling error, 'immedietely' is misspelled, 'manazine' and 'preffered' contain typos, and 'touriusm' and 'businessess' have spelling slips. Additionally, some collocations are awkward, such as 'crime ratio'. While these errors do not heavily impede communication, they highlight the need for greater precision and care with spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully using relative clauses and conditional structures, such as 'which would ultimately affect the small businesses who rely on the tourist that visit our town'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. Examples include article and plural noun agreement errors like 'the tourist that visit' instead of 'tourists who visit', prepositions inside patterns such as 'come across your Travel Times Magazine' lacking the correct preposition, and awkward phrasing like 'request to correct' instead of 'request that you correct'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, though the sign-off 'Your faithfully' contains a minor grammatical error and should be 'Yours faithfully'.
