IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have just read an article in an international travel magazine which contained some information about your town that is incorrect.
Write a letter to the editor of the magazine. In your letter
- correct the information in the article
- explain why it is important for the magazine to give correct information
- suggest what the magazine should do about this situation
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing you to complain regarding the article that you published today in your magazine about my city, Karachi.
Starting with its initial paragraph, you stated that the national meuseum opens at 8am and closes at 6pm everyday, which is not correct. The actual timings are from 9:30am to 7pm on the weekdays and 9am to 9pm on the weekends. In addition to this you have mentioned that the commencement of the national anthem is done by Asim Azhar, this is a false statement as he only does that on special occasions like Eid or Independence day.
Moving on, it was also mentioned in the article that the famous food street of karachi is the 'Burns Road' which is correct, but the statement which highlights the cuisines available there is incorrect as you have written that it has the variety of cuisines from all over the world especially Italian and Chinese while they do not have any italian dish on the menu.
I would request you to kindly look into the mistakes and correct as it will affect the visitors because mostly the tourists read your magazine before visiting any place so to avoid any mis-convenience please do the ammendments and repost the article tomorrow. Moreover, update the online version of the article on your website as soon as possible. Next time, make sure to verify the news you are posting in your article is correct or not.
I would really appreciate your effort in this matter.
Yours faithfully,
Kisa.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You address all three requirements clearly: you correct the museum hours, clarify when Asim Azhar performs, and identify the inaccurate claims about food at Burns Road. You also explain why accuracy matters to tourists and request corrections to both the printed and online versions. These details make the purpose of the letter clear and support your requests. The explanation of the impact is somewhat general, however: you say tourists read the magazine before visiting, but do not specify what practical problems the errors could cause. The request to repost the article “tomorrow” is also quite demanding without explaining why that deadline is necessary. Developing the consequences and making the proposed remedy more measured would strengthen an already well-focused response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression from the reason for writing, through the factual corrections, to the requested action and a polite closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish the museum information from the food-street correction, and signposts such as “In addition to this” and “Moreover” make relationships between points easy to follow. Some linking is a little formulaic: “Starting with its initial paragraph” and “Moving on” announce transitions rather than connecting the ideas naturally. The final paragraph also combines the importance of accuracy, several requests, and future advice in one long sequence. Grouping the impact separately from the requested remedies, and using more varied, less explicit transitions, would make the organisation feel more fluent.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range for a formal complaint, including “actual timings,” “false statement,” “variety of cuisines,” and “verify.” These choices communicate the corrections and requested action effectively. There are also several spelling and word-choice or collocation slips that keep the vocabulary from sounding consistently controlled: “meuseum,” “ammendments,” and “mis-convenience” are misspelled, while “commencement of the national anthem is done by” is an awkward way to describe who performs it. Capitalisation is inconsistent in “karachi,” “italian,” and “Independence day.” Aim for accurate spelling and more natural combinations, such as “the anthem is performed by” and “make the necessary corrections.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “the statement which highlights the cuisines available there” and the contrast in “while they do not have any Italian dish.” Meaning remains clear throughout, and several sentences are well controlled. Some grammatical and punctuation issues remain. For example, “I am writing you to complain regarding” has an awkward verb pattern, and “correct as it will affect the visitors” lacks a clear grammatical link between the request and its reason. The long sentence beginning “I would request you” also joins several requests without clear sentence boundaries. Use more natural patterns such as “I am writing to complain about,” and separate the requested actions into shorter, accurately punctuated sentences.
