Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to express my dissatisfaction about an article published in your magazine as it contains some false information about my hometown. The writer claimed that Sydney does not attract many tourists these days, however, I completely disagree with this statement. My town is gaining more and more popularity among international travellers every year because of various factors such as our welcoming community, diverse culture, the big fiddle and local food restaurants. Moreover, the article criticises our health care system although we have easy access to Cape Breton Regional Hospital and other walk-in clinics.
Since this magazine is quite famous for finding accurate information about international travel, it is significant to verify the information before publishing it publicly. As false facts may mislead the general public, providing correct data becomes primary responsibility of any publisher so that they can gain trust among audience.
For resolving this issue, the magazine should recify its mistake by publishing the correct information about this town. Before sharing the next article about Sydney, the facts should rechecked to avoid any further confusion.
Looking forward to hearing a positive response.
Kind regards,
Jashanpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You address all three requirements clearly: you correct the claim about tourism by describing Sydney’s growing popularity, challenge the criticism of local healthcare with specific facilities, explain that inaccurate facts can mislead readers and damage trust, and recommend correcting the article and checking future reports. These details make the letter relevant and purposeful. The explanation of why accuracy matters is clear, though it remains somewhat general; it could be strengthened by explaining the practical consequences for travellers or the town. Likewise, specify how the magazine should correct the record, such as publishing a correction or contacting local sources. The response otherwise maintains a clear, appropriate position throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: it introduces the complaint, explains why accuracy matters, and then proposes action. Paragraphing supports these distinct purposes, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Since,” and “For resolving this issue” help readers follow the argument. The closing is also appropriate for a formal letter. Cohesion is generally effective, although some transitions feel slightly formulaic, and “For resolving this issue” is less natural than a direct transition such as “To resolve this issue.” The final recommendation could connect more explicitly to the earlier concerns by stating that a correction should address both tourism and healthcare. Overall, the organisation is logical and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “dissatisfaction,” “international travellers,” “diverse culture,” “mislead,” and “verify.” These choices communicate the topic clearly, and some phrasing shows an effort to use more formal language. However, a few word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “recify” is misspelled, “primary responsibility” needs an article, and “gain trust among audience” is not idiomatic. “The big fiddle” is also too informal for this context; a more precise name or description would be stronger. These issues do not prevent understanding, but more accurate collocations and careful spelling would make the vocabulary more controlled and natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “The writer claimed … however, I completely disagree” and the reason clause beginning “Since this magazine is quite famous…”. Many sentences are clear and grammatically controlled. A few errors remain: “the facts should rechecked” needs “should be rechecked,” and “providing correct data becomes primary responsibility” needs an article before “primary responsibility.” The sentence joining the writer’s claim and your disagreement would also be clearer with a full stop or semicolon before “However.” These are limited issues rather than persistent problems, and the message remains easy to understand. Continue checking passive constructions, articles, and punctuation in longer sentences.
