IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people think it's better to choose friends who always have the same opinions as them. Other people believe it's good to have friends who sometimes disagree with them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Today, some people believe that it is better to choose friends who have similar beliefs as them while others believe that it is good to have friends who sometimes disagree with them. There are varied reasons for this as it increases the chances of receiving good advice every time due to similarity in the opinions. However, other thinks that they will save them from making wrong decision. In my opinion, advice from friend either having same opinion or not is whole depend upon the circumstances.

To begin with, today people prefer to make friends with similar opinions because it offers them an advantage of receiving same advice which they already have in their mind and receiving same favour from their friends increases the chances of taking right step. For example, students facing difficulty in a particular subject are likely to choose friends facing difficulty with same subject.

On the other hand, some people believe that its always good to have friends who sometimes disagree with them because it allows them to receive true and actual advice which at that time seems unfavourable to them but helpful in their future. For example, getting a particular advice on the wrong decision save them from negative result

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on repetitive phrasing, such as 'same opinion' and 'good advice'. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'whole depend' instead of 'wholly depends'. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and collocations related to the topic of friendship and decision-making, and ensure you use words in their correct grammatical form.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('other thinks that they will save them') and missing articles. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of apostrophes (e.g., 'its' instead of 'it's'). To improve, focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and attempt to use a wider variety of complex sentence structures with greater precision.
