Student answer (Band 6.5)

A few people believe that individuals should select those persons as friend who have similar perspective as them. However, others argue that is better approach to have friends who have opposite opinion. This essay will discuss both perspectives along with my opinion in the subsequent paragraphs.

To commence with the first viewpoint that is accord with the first viewpoint. The primary advantage of choosing friends with similar opinion is that when people have same perspective then there are less chances of conflicts. To explain it, disputes among friends on different topic weaken their friendship bond and create misunderstanding among friends. For instance, religious conflicts among true friends destroy their long-term friendship. Consequently, friendship not last for longer period.

On the other hand, some critics argue that it is good approach to have friends with different opinion because people get chance to learn from the experience, and knowledge of other person having different perspective. To justify it, many friends who have different opinion say truth to their friend and always try to show him right path. Moreover, they also point out the mistakes of his friend which help his friend to succeed in life by avoiding repetition of mistakes. For example, different opinion friends help his friend to understand the opposite side of a thing. As a results, opposite opinion friend is essential to learn the shortcoming and succeed in life.

In conclusion, although there are numerous drawbacks of have friend with dissimilar perspective such as loose friend bond and mutual conflicts, I believe that such friends are beneficial for individuals because they always correct them when they make any mistake and supervise them to follow right path.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both viewpoints and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the reduction of conflict for similar-minded friends and the personal growth gained from friends with differing opinions. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat repetitive and lacks depth. For instance, the argument about 'learning from experience' is mentioned but could be better supported with more specific, nuanced examples. The position is consistent throughout, but the overall development of the arguments remains at a fairly basic level, which prevents it from reaching a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To commence with', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as the redundant phrasing 'To commence with the first viewpoint that is accord with the first viewpoint'. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the second body paragraph where the pronoun 'his' is used repeatedly without a clear antecedent, making the flow of ideas slightly disjointed.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There is a reliance on basic terms like 'good', 'bad', 'right', and 'wrong'. While the student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary such as 'perspective', 'disputes', and 'shortcoming', there are frequent errors in collocation and word choice, such as 'friendship not last for longer period' instead of 'friendships do not last for long' and 'opposite opinion friend'. These errors do not impede communication, but they demonstrate a limited range that prevents a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the right path'), subject-verb agreement ('friendship not last'), and pluralization ('different opinion friends'). Some sentences are awkward, such as 'A few people believe that individuals should select those persons as friend who have similar perspective as them.' While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors is noticeable and affects the overall fluency of the writing. More attention to basic sentence construction and proofreading for small errors would improve the score.
