Student answer (Band 7.0)

Few individuals believe that it is the best decision to choose friends who have the same thinking as you, while others think it is better to have friends who do not agree with you all the time. However, in this essay, I will discuss both viewpoints and give my opinion with relevant examples.

To commence with, there is no doubt that in this contemporary era, it is so difficult to find a true friend because nowadays people are with you for their own benefit. Moreover, friends who always agree with you even when you are doing wrong; then understand these types of persons never stand with you when you need them. Additionally, nowadays parents are the best friends because if their children do something wrong, they are angry with their kids and do their best to teach them the right things. For example, the younger generation blindly trusts their friends because they feel it is a great idea to do the same as their friends do; that's why they get involved in bad things such as smoking, taking drugs, and so on that destroy their whole career. Hence, it is very crucial to make friends who do not always agree with you, but they try to teach you when you are incorrect.

On the other side, people think it is a great idea to choose friends who sometimes disagree with you because they have enough life experience and know the truth of society, which is the reason they believe a true friend always tries to show the correct path to their friends. Moreover, it also helps in studies because sometimes we don't know the concept of a particular thing, so at that time, if we are hesitant to ask something from the professor, a friend has a different personally help us solve our problem, but if a person always agrees with you, always say, " Yes, you are right, and you both loose marks during the examination. Thus, sometimes a friend who disagrees in opinions helps us to achieve something.

In conclusion, choosing friends is such a difficult task, and most of the time individuals fail in this task. Therefore, I personally believe that it is a great thing to have a friend who sometimes disagrees with you because a true friend always shows the right path.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The essay addresses both viewpoints and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the influence of friends on behavior and academic performance. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat uneven. The paragraph regarding parents as friends is slightly tangential to the main topic of choosing peer friends. Furthermore, the argument about academic performance is a strong point but could be expanded with more specific detail to reach a higher band. The position is consistent throughout, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central topic. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is slightly disrupted by awkward phrasing, such as the transition into the example about parents. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentences are slightly disjointed, which prevents the essay from reaching the higher bands where cohesion is more fluid and unobtrusive.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use some less common vocabulary, such as 'contemporary era' and 'crucial'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'a friend has a different personally help us' and 'loose marks' (should be 'lose'). These errors do not impede communication, but they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and spelling to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and sentence construction (e.g., 'friends who always agree with you even when you are doing wrong; then understand these types of persons never stand with you'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some run-on sentences and misuse of semicolons. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, they occur frequently enough to limit the score to a 6.0.
