Student answer (Band 7.0)

The mindset of friends has become a widely debatable topic these days. Some support the fact that friends should be of the same mindset while, others believe that friends should have different mindsets. I will discuss both the views in the upcoming paragraphs and will state my opinion.

On the one hand, many people support the fact that friends should have the same mindsets. This is because it is easier to connect with people of same mindsets and they can understand your situations better than anyone else as they have been through same experiences and dealt with it the same way. Moreover, friends with the same mindsets will support your ideas and views which will lead to less disagreements. Also, they will mostly have the same thoughts regarding the problems one faces on a daily basis. A study depicts that the friends with similar mindsets tend to feel more secure in friendship than others. Therefore, many people prefer to choose friends with same mindsets.

On the other hand, many feel that friends should have different mindsets. This is due to the fact that friends with different mindsets can overview different perspectives of a problem which was being missed by an individual. In addition to that, it is better to have a different opinions towards various things which will results in the better outcomes. Moreover, friends will different mindsets can help in finding limitations of the issues which are being ignored by friends with similar mindset. A report states that people with different mindsets tend to deal with difficult situations easier than the friends with similar mindsets as friends with same mindset are more focused on almost same aspects of each problem. Hence, people try to make friends with the different mindsets.

To conclude, I firmly believe that we should choose friends with different mindsets because they can perceive situations from different perspectives from us which will help us to deal with the situation in a better way. While, friends with same mindset can increase comfort, but they can limit each other from seeing outside the box.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both viewpoints and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and logically extended, such as the discussion on emotional security versus the benefit of diverse perspectives. However, the development is slightly repetitive, as the term 'mindset' is used excessively throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, the student should aim to vary the vocabulary used to describe these concepts and provide more specific, concrete examples rather than general statements about 'a study' or 'a report', which lack detail and credibility.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Moreover', and 'In addition to that' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical, and the paragraphing, while sufficient, could be improved by ensuring that the transition between ideas is more fluid. The referencing is generally clear, though the repetitive sentence structures occasionally make the flow feel slightly predictable.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. However, the range is somewhat limited by the constant repetition of the word 'mindset'. There is an attempt to use some less common vocabulary, but it is often used in a repetitive or slightly unnatural way. To improve, the student should focus on using synonyms and more precise collocations to avoid redundancy and demonstrate a more sophisticated command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are recurring grammatical errors, such as 'which will results in' (should be 'result') and 'deal with difficult situations easier' (should be 'more easily'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation issues, such as the unnecessary comma in 'While, friends with same mindset'. The control of grammar is generally good, but the frequency of these small errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band.
