IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people think it's better to choose friends who always have the same opinions as them. Other people believe it's good to have friends who sometimes disagree with them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Some individuals believes that the friends who have same opinions as them are better, while other argues that it is more beneficial to have friends with different opinions. Both the view points will be discussed in the upcoming paragraphs with my opinion.

First and foremost, friendship will be last long with the people who have same opinions. The friendship bond will get stronger with time, and people usually spend time with the individual of identical in nature. For example, most of the high school students are friends not just because they study together but due to the fact that their interest are in the same subjects. Moreover, a better advice will be given by the person who understand the situation of the other person. This would be more common in the persons who have similarity in their thoughts. For instance, a businessman will understand the problems of the another businessman.

On the flip side, it's better to have friends who sometimes disagree with them. This is the only person who tell you about the other side of story. To exemplify this, a person who think identical to you will always be on your side whether it is right or wrong, but the person who sometimes disagree with you, will be the only person who thinks the other side of the story before getting to any conclusion. In addition to this, the person whose opinions are different, will always encourage the other person to overcome their weakness by telling them.

In my opinion, both the types of friends are necessary. One should always support you with similar thinking and other would give you the viewpoint of the other side of story.

However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the conclusion is quite abrupt and could be more substantial to effectively summarize the main points discussed in the body paragraphs. Overall, the structure is functional and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific language, such as 'friendship bond', 'identical in nature', and 'overcome their weakness'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'friendship will be last long' and 'the person who think identical to you'. Improving the precision of word choice and working on collocations would help elevate the lexical score. The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the intended meaning without causing confusion for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'individuals believes', 'other argues', 'interest are') and article usage. Some sentences are also slightly awkward, such as 'the person who think identical to you'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic agreement rules and ensuring that complex sentence structures are constructed accurately.
