Student answer (Band 7.0)
Some people argue that they should choose their companions who always have the matching belief as them, while others believe that having friends with different suggestions might be helpful with various problems. This essay will discuss views before explaining why I think that friends with different opinions play a crucial role in our daily lives.
To begin with, there are several reasons for choosing friends with same ideas. Primarily, having these people around can reduce conflicts between friendships, which eventually makes a deeper relationship with stronger bonds and trust. Agreeable friends provides a great sense of comfort, reassurance and validation since they are always on the same page, and limits the fear of breaking faith. In addition, it is easier for people to plan for activities and holiday destinations. For instance, individuals who have mates with same opinions often find it less challenging to go on a trip as they think similar such as price and accommodation. Therefore, it provides a stress-free travel during their journey.
On the other hand, friends who disagrees sometimes can actually help them to save from risky situations. It benefits individual to have a broader perspective and think differently according to the circumstances. Despite facing issues with conflicting behavior, I believe that these friendships lasts longer because they have gone through worst phases of their life but still stay positive. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The essay addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the comfort of agreement versus the growth potential of disagreement. However, the development is slightly uneven; the conclusion is incomplete, cutting off mid-sentence, which prevents a full summary of the argument. While the position is clear throughout, the supporting points in the second body paragraph could be more thoroughly extended to reach a higher band. Overall, the response is well-focused on the topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'In addition', 'On the other hand', and 'Hence' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, the abrupt ending in the conclusion negatively impacts the overall flow and coherence of the final section. Despite this, the progression of ideas remains clear throughout the majority of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at more sophisticated phrasing like 'broader perspective' and 'crucial role'. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'matching belief' instead of 'similar opinions' or 'shared beliefs', and 'breaking faith' which is slightly unnatural in this context. The range is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band. The vocabulary is functional but rarely moves beyond standard, expected terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement ('Agreeable friends provides' should be 'provide') and incorrect word forms ('friends who disagrees' should be 'disagree'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. The control of punctuation is generally good, but the incomplete final sentence is a significant error in terms of structure and completion. A wider range of error-free complex sentences would be needed for a higher score.
