Student answer (Band 6.5)

Having a good friends in life is needed as much as we need our family. Few individuals claim that having friends with similar opinions are good, while others are opposing that friends are those who have different point of view. I strongly believe that good friends always correct you in your every wrong decision, so, they need to correct each other sometimes.

Firstly, choosing friends with similar taste boosts their understanding and confidence among people. True friends are always support each other no matter how the circumstances and they will work together. For example, if one friend wants to become a actor and other will push him and said you can do it will help the other to become a successful actor in life rather than demotivate him. Thus, same thinking of two friends make their bond strong and enhance their understanding.

On the other hand, friend who will correct you in your wrongs doing is also extremely important. This type of friend will leads you to a right path and put a positive impact on you. For example, nowadays, it is very rare that people will correct you, they always want you to fall down and see your downfall. True are those who could guide you to do good things.

Overall, Every individual have their own choices, some opt friends with similar opinion as they want comfort, whereas other like to make friends who can oppose their opinion if they are wrong which help them to become a successful person. I really like to choose the second option as I want someone who can guide me when I will choose wrong path.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, though the development is somewhat basic. For instance, the argument for friends with similar opinions focuses on 'confidence' and 'understanding', while the argument for disagreeing friends focuses on 'guidance'. While these points are clear, they could be extended further with more nuanced examples. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarises the writer's stance. To reach a higher band, ensure that the supporting examples are more detailed and directly linked to the core arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'On the other hand', and 'Overall' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, although there are minor issues with pronoun usage, such as 'they will work together' where the antecedent is slightly ambiguous. The flow of ideas is logical, but the connection between sentences could be smoother to improve the overall cohesion of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are some instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'wrongs doing' instead of 'wrongdoing' and 'become a actor' instead of 'become an actor'. While the meaning is always clear, the range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on common words. To improve, the student should aim to incorporate more topic-specific collocations and less common lexical items. For example, instead of 'same thinking', phrases like 'shared values' or 'congruent perspectives' would demonstrate a higher level of lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Every individual have their own choices') and article usage (e.g., 'become a actor'). There are also issues with word order and sentence construction, such as 'friend who will correct you in your wrongs doing is also extremely important'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to suggest a lack of control over more complex structures. Focusing on proofreading for basic errors would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
