Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is widely believed that making friends who has similar mindset is beneficial. while others opine that it is better to have someone to argue with. However, I think friends with similar thoughts are crucial for a true friendship.

The main reason for opting friends with similar is to enjoy more in what they are doing. Friends who have same opinion about anything such as hobbies, physical activities and music taste, they tend to have more fun while doing those things together instead of doing alone. By doing many things together friends can not only strengthen their bond but can also build more trust. Consequently, people feel more happy and loved while enjoying with peers who have similar mindset.

Sometimes friends get more ideas if they have people with different opinions around them. As in many situations people do not find any feasible solution of a particular problem, a friend who is capable to give different solution to tackle an issue could be useful. Although at certain times friends get indulged in arguments, it is important for them because they learn from each other by getting various views for a situation. So people often prefer to have friends with different mindset.

In my opinion, while doing several things together with a friend who have the same feelings, people build a true connection. Whether the situation is bad or in moment of happiness, true friends always stand with each others. This kind of connection could be built only when people are having same mindset and love to do things at the same time. Thus, in order to have a person who would be there in thick and thin conditions, people must make friends with likewise thoughts.

In conclusion, although friends with different mindset provide some useful information, activities performed with people who have same prospective are prominent as it helps to build life long connections.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, though the development is somewhat repetitive. For instance, the argument for similar-minded friends focuses heavily on 'doing things together' in both the second and fourth paragraphs. To reach a higher band, the development of the opposing view could be more nuanced, moving beyond simple problem-solving to discuss how diverse perspectives foster personal growth. The position is consistent throughout, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'However', 'Consequently', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'In my opinion' and 'Thus'. Referencing is generally clear, though some sentences are slightly disjointed, such as 'As in many situations people do not find any feasible solution of a particular problem, a friend who is capable to give different solution to tackle an issue could be useful.' Improving the flow between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common collocations, such as 'thick and thin conditions' and 'feasible solution'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice and form, such as 'similar mindset' (should be 'a similar mindset'), 'same prospective' (should be 'perspective'), and 'get indulged in' (should be 'engage in'). While these errors do not impede communication, they limit the precision of the writing. Expanding the range of vocabulary and ensuring correct collocation would improve the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('a similar mindset'), subject-verb agreement ('friends who has'), and preposition usage. For example, 'friends who have same opinion' is missing an article, and 'stand with each others' should be 'stand with each other'. These errors are persistent but do not prevent the reader from understanding the message. To improve, the student should focus on basic grammatical accuracy and proofreading for common errors in articles and plurals.
