Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is a debatable topic, while some individuals believe that it is always great to have a friend who is on your side for the opinion you have, other think that your friends should not agree with your view always. In this essay, I will shed some light on both perspective and give my own thoughts on it.

Friends are the second family for everyone, that is why it is widely believed, choose your friend circle wisely. Additionally, it is also important that having a peer with the same mentality, thoughts, and opinions gives you an extra boost and power to make happen anything. To illustrate this, if you have a friend with same opinion and you are planning to do something but confused or stuck to make things moving, you need a friend with same opinion who can guide and support you to make your life easy with travelling somewhere, watching a content, and deciding a place to eat.

In contrast, there is a another side of friendship which plays a vital role. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. The examples provided, such as 'travelling somewhere' or 'deciding a place to eat', are quite simplistic and do not fully explore the deeper implications of the topic. Furthermore, the conclusion is incomplete, as the final sentence cuts off abruptly, leaving the argument unfinished. To reach a higher band, you should aim to provide more sophisticated examples and ensure that your conclusion fully synthesizes your main points rather than trailing off.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'In contrast', and 'To illustrate this'. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by mechanical phrasing and some awkward transitions. The referencing is sometimes unclear, and the abrupt ending significantly impacts the overall coherence of the piece. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the logical progression within the paragraphs could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a strong, complete concluding thought would enhance the cohesion of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'mentality', 'perspective', and 'fruitful'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'make happen anything' instead of 'make anything happen' and 'not able to see the reality' instead of 'unable to see the reality'. There are also some minor spelling and grammatical slips that occasionally affect the natural flow. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and using more precise academic vocabulary to express your ideas with greater clarity and sophistication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, they often contain errors in syntax and punctuation, such as 'weather it is choosing a university' (spelling error: 'whether') and 'these kind of friends' (agreement error: 'this kind of friend' or 'these kinds of friends'). There are also issues with sentence fragments and missing words, particularly in the final paragraph. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent punctuation will help improve your accuracy.
