IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people think it's better to choose friends who always have the same opinions as them. Other people believe it's good to have friends who sometimes disagree with them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Few folks believe that it is better to select friends who have the similar kind of opinion as them and on the other hand some individuals feel that to choose friends who occasionally have the difference of opinion is better. I would like to say that each individual have the seperate personality traits and depending on that they choose their circle. I will discuss both the views in my essay below.

On one side, there are people who have introvert personality hence they prefer folks who have the similar interest. Sometime, this works in best way becuase in this relaltionship they have good level of understanding and may be have same goals in life which helps each others to stay motivated. The only drawback in this approach is that people can miss out to the opportunity to connect with the smart minded people. For Instance, I know two friends, they have been studying together since they were 7 years old moreover both of them had same dream of becoming pilot and now they both have secured their dream job.

On the other side, few individual have the extrovert personality and prefer to connect with any person without hesistation. They also attend social gathering, seminars and conferences. Additionally this helps them to have wider perspective of the situation. However, it sometimes does happen that two individual have different opinion for single thing which might create conflict between them.

To conclude, I would say that each individual have the set of expectation from their friends however in my opinion if anyone have friends from diverse backgrounds is good and because a person can get better and broad perspective of the things.

Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the logical structure is sufficient to follow the writer's argument without difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'introvert personality' and 'diverse backgrounds'. However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'smart minded people' instead of 'like-minded' or 'intellectually stimulating', and 'difference of opinion' used in a slightly unnatural way. Spelling errors like 'becuase', 'relaltionship', and 'hesistation' occur, though they do not impede overall communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'each individual have', 'two individual have') and article usage. Punctuation is also inconsistent in places. While the writer attempts complex sentences, the control over these structures is not always consistent, leading to minor errors that persist throughout the text. However, these errors rarely cause confusion for the reader.
