Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people think it's better to have friends who can always have the same opinion as them, Whereas some people believe its good to have friends who can disagree with sometimes with them.

However, both scenarios have their own merits and demerits. In this essay we will be discussing about both scenarios and at the end I will be stating my opinion on it.

It is very easy to be friends with the person who agrees with you and mostly have the same opinions as you. As you don't have to argue and can easily relate to each other, without having any sort of argument or debate.

While, having a friend who sometimes disagree with you can be challenging as you don't really resonate with them majorly. But, it could also lead to an advantage as you can pursue that opinion from different perspective, so you can think which viewpoint works best for you.

So in my opinion, having friends who agrees with you and have same opinions as you is a blessing, but sometimes you need to take crucial decisions in your life, for which you need to have different viewpoint. So having friends who have various opinion or different way of thinking from you, can be beneficial, in order to come to a conclusion for your self. In conclusion, although having friends who has the same opinion can be comforting but I believe that having friends who have different viewpoint are beneficial, they can encourage us to consider another perspective and help us make better decision in important situations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention that agreeing friends are 'comforting' and disagreeing friends offer 'different perspectives,' these points are not fully extended with concrete examples or deeper analysis. The essay remains quite general throughout. To reach a higher band, you should provide specific scenarios or personal experiences to illustrate why these friendships are beneficial. The structure is clear, but the content needs more depth to fully satisfy the requirements of a Band 7 or higher.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'However,' 'While,' and 'In conclusion' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the paragraphing is a bit sparse. The transition between the two viewpoints could be smoother. To improve, try to use a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensure that each paragraph focuses on a single, well-developed idea to enhance the overall progression of your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'merits,' 'demerits,' 'resonate,' and 'viewpoint.' However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is some repetition of phrases like 'same opinions as you.' There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'discussing about' (which should simply be 'discussing') and 'pursue that opinion' (where 'consider' or 'examine' would be more appropriate). Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise collocations would improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('friends who agrees,' 'friends who has') and punctuation errors (unnecessary commas). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'can disagree with sometimes with them.' To achieve a higher band, you need to increase the frequency of error-free complex sentences and pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and preposition usage. Your current control is sufficient for communication but lacks the precision required for higher bands.
