Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often argued that people should keep their homes and workplaces clean, tidy, and well organised, with everything in its designated place. I strongly agree with this view because an orderly environment not only improves productivity but also contributes significantly to mental well-being and efficiency.
First and foremost, maintaining an organised environment can greatly enhance concentration and productivity. When people know exactly where their belongings and work materials are, they can access them quickly instead of wasting valuable time searching for misplaced items. This is particularly important in workplaces, where even small delays can accumulate and reduce overall efficiency. For example, an employee who keeps documents, stationery, and digital files systematically organised is likely to complete tasks more quickly than someone who works in a chaotic environment. In my experience, studying at a clean desk allows me to concentrate for longer because there are fewer distractions around me.
Furthermore, tidiness can have a positive impact on people's psychological well-being. A cluttered environment can create a sense of disorder and may make individuals feel overwhelmed, whereas a clean and organised space tends to promote calmness and mental clarity. After a demanding day at work, returning to a tidy home can therefore provide a relaxing atmosphere in which people can rest and recover. This is especially relevant today, when many individuals already experience considerable pressure from their professional and personal responsibilities.
However, it is important not to become excessively concerned with perfection. A home or workplace does not need to look immaculate at all times. The main objective should be functionality and cleanliness rather than creating an unrealistic standard of order.
In conclusion, I believe that keeping homes and workplaces tidy is highly beneficial because it saves time, increases productivity, reduces distractions, and supports mental well-being. Nevertheless, organisation should be practical rather than obsessive, allowing people to enjoy their surroundings without unnecessary pressure.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 1.0
The response is completely off-topic. The prompt asks for a discussion on whether it is better to have friends with similar or different opinions. However, the essay discusses the benefits of keeping homes and workplaces clean and tidy. Because the response fails to address the task prompt entirely, it cannot be assessed on the development of the required ideas. While the writing is coherent and grammatically sound, it does not fulfill the requirements of the task set by the examiner. Consequently, the score for Task Achievement is severely impacted as the candidate has not responded to the specific question asked.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
Despite being off-topic, the essay itself is well-structured. The candidate uses clear paragraphing, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct point (productivity, psychological well-being, and a counter-argument). There is a logical progression of ideas, and cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'Furthermore', 'However', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. The referencing is clear, and the flow between sentences is smooth. If the content had been relevant to the prompt, this would have been a high-scoring response for coherence and cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
The vocabulary is varied and appropriate for a formal essay. The candidate demonstrates a good range of topic-specific vocabulary related to organization and productivity, such as 'designated place', 'systematically organised', 'psychological well-being', and 'mental clarity'. The word choice is precise, and there are no noticeable errors in collocation or spelling. The language used is natural and sophisticated, showing a level of control that would be suitable for a high-band score if the content were relevant to the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The candidate displays a wide range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences with subordinate clauses (e.g., 'When people know exactly where their belongings... they can access them quickly'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly throughout. There is a good mix of simple and complex forms, and the control over verb tenses and subject-verb agreement is excellent. The writing is fluent and accurate, reflecting a high level of grammatical competence.
