Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's society , people make friends either socially or through social media platforms. Some individuals believe that its nice to have friends who have same opinions and agree with them as they , whereas other think that it's good to have friends who sometimes oppose or disagree with them. I will discuss both the viewpoints and give my opinion in the subsequent paragraphs.

One part of society thinks that its good to choose companions who always agree and have same choices and opinions because it reduces conflicts and creates more peaceful friendship. Friends with similar beliefs and understanding help , understand each other easily which decreases conflicts in them.

For example, Two friends sharing their same interests in playing badminton will talk , share new information regarding it and both of them will enjoy it.

On the other hand, friends who sometimes can help each other develop and think different perspectives. A good friend will always not let his other partner do the wrong things, they will respectfully talk with each other. This lead to a respectful disagreement. Additionally, a good friend will always resist the other friends wrong idea as they do not want to get them in trouble. To illustrate, if one friend is bullying someone, and the other friend is stopping the other one its for their goodness.

I strongly agree with the opinion that it's good to have a partner who sometimes gives some different perspective respectfully. Honest friends help us identify our mistakes and introduce us to new ideas.

In conclusion, friends with similar opinions helps in building harmony and reduce conflicts, whereas with distinct ideas opens you a door to information and experiences. I strongly agree with the idea of having a friend with different thoughts.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both viewpoints and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of conflict reduction for similar-minded friends and personal growth for those with differing perspectives. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the example regarding badminton is quite simple and does not fully explore the depth of the argument. To reach a higher band, you should aim to extend your supporting points with more detailed explanations or nuanced examples that demonstrate a deeper understanding of the social dynamics involved in friendship.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each viewpoint, and a conclusion. There is a basic attempt at using cohesive devices, such as 'On the other hand', 'Additionally', and 'In conclusion'. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and some transitions feel abrupt. For example, the transition between the general statement about bullying and the conclusion is a bit sudden. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence logically follows the previous one would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'social media platforms', 'companions', 'perspectives', and 'harmony'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'always not let his other partner do the wrong things'. While the meaning is clear, the word choice lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. To improve, focus on learning collocations and using more precise academic vocabulary to express your ideas more fluently and naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('friends with similar opinions helps') and punctuation errors (unnecessary spaces before commas). There are also minor errors in article usage and word order. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. You should focus on proofreading your work to correct basic subject-verb agreement and punctuation mistakes, and practice using more varied, error-free complex structures.
