Student answer (Band 6.0)

People hold different views regarding whether to have friends who always have same opinion as them or to choose friends who sometimes disagree with them. Although friends with same opinion has some merit, I believe that friends who disagree with something are essential for personal development.

To begin with, having friends with same opinion creates less conflict. This is because there is fewer arguments and misunderstandings between two of them as both are on same page. Additionally, there will be more comfort as you can enjoy similar activities and interest. For example, two friends involve in presentation making would agree with each other ideas rather than contradicting them and will enjoy preparing slides.

On the other hand, friends who sometimes disagree assist in generating new perspective and can help in building personal growth. The main reason for this is if the ideas are different than we can learn to see things differently. Moreover, in this type of friendship, a friend can point out our mistake and can assist to correct those mistakes. Also, friends who disagree with something can give better advice and challenge your ideas which improves better dicission making. For instance, if one friend is trying to solve a mathematical problem which has lenghty steps can be corrected by other friend having different method to solve it easily.

To conclude, I would strongly recommend to have different opinion friend, because good friends shoild give honest advise, not simply agree with everything you say.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the essay is 245 words long, failing to meet the 250-word minimum requirement. This under-length negatively impacts the development of ideas, as the arguments, while relevant, remain somewhat superficial. For instance, the example regarding mathematical problems is a bit simplistic and could have been expanded to better illustrate the benefits of diverse perspectives. To improve, ensure you fully develop your supporting points and meet the word count to allow for a more comprehensive discussion of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Additionally', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by minor errors in referencing and article usage, such as 'between two of them' and 'on same page'. While the progression is generally clear, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical. Improving the variety of linking phrases and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There are several instances of missing articles and awkward collocations, such as 'have same opinion' instead of 'have the same opinion' and 'presentation making'. The vocabulary is repetitive, particularly the use of 'friends' and 'disagree'. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more sophisticated synonyms and idiomatic expressions, such as 'conflicting viewpoints' or 'intellectual growth', and pay closer attention to article usage and word formation to ensure more natural expression.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that, while not impeding communication, are noticeable. Common issues include missing articles ('on same page', 'point out our mistake'), subject-verb agreement errors ('friends... has some merit'), and awkward phrasing ('if the ideas are different than we can learn'). While you attempt complex sentences, they are often slightly inaccurate. To improve, focus on mastering basic article usage and ensuring that your complex sentences are grammatically sound. Proofreading for these recurring minor errors would significantly improve your score.
