Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a personal opinion, fulfilling the basic requirements of the prompt. However, the development of ideas is limited and often repetitive. The argument regarding 'wealthy friends' is somewhat tangential and does not fully explore the psychological or social benefits of having friends with differing opinions. The ideas are presented in a stream-of-consciousness style, which makes it difficult for the reader to follow the logic. To improve, you should focus on providing clear, distinct arguments for each perspective and support them with more relevant, well-explained examples rather than anecdotal or confusing scenarios.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay lacks a clear structure. While there are paragraph breaks, the internal logic within paragraphs is weak. The use of cohesive devices is very limited and often inaccurate, such as the repetitive use of 'at that time' and 'so'. There is no clear progression of ideas, and the transition between the two viewpoints is abrupt. The conclusion is also poorly integrated and does not effectively summarize the main points. To improve, use a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'conversely', 'consequently') and ensure each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that guides the reader through your argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite basic and repetitive. There are frequent errors in word choice and spelling (e.g., 'thair' for 'their', 'benfit' for 'benefit', 'dicision' for 'decision', 'beviour' for 'behaviour'). The range of vocabulary is insufficient to express complex ideas, often relying on simple, informal phrasing. To reach a higher band, you need to expand your vocabulary to include more precise, academic terms related to social relationships and personal development, and pay closer attention to correct spelling and word formation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede communication. There are significant issues with sentence structure, including run-on sentences and fragments. Subject-verb agreement is inconsistent, and there is a lack of control over complex sentence structures. Punctuation is also problematic, with many missing commas and periods, making the text difficult to read. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring that each sentence has a clear subject and verb, and practice using complex structures like relative clauses or conditional sentences correctly.
