Student answer (Band 6.5)

Some individuals are of the opinion that it is better to choose friends who agree with them, whereas others argue that it is beneficial to have friends who sometimes disagree with them. Friends who have differents opinions have a lot that be gained from each other.

Having friends that has the same idea and though as you is good as they tend to understand each other without much being said and it could lead to a decrease in fights and quarrels. In addition, it helps in making things convenient for the individuals. For example, people who has the same characters and personality have been proven to last longer in friendships by the World Health Organisation.

Friends with different point of view helps in broadening your perspective as it help improving the way one thinks and how things are done. Futhermore, they enables one make a better decisions and encourages personal growth. For instance, my best friend and I had contrasting views on what to wear for a picnic but after much disagreement, we were able to come to a compromise which contributed to our friendship growth and made us realised that we don't have to agree to strengthen our bond.

In my view, having friends that has different opinions prove to be challenging but with patience and guidance it would encourage our interactions with one another and also develop meaningful relationship.

In conclusion, building a strong friendship with different opinions should be a priority as it enhance critical thinking, better decision and prepare you for real life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the benefits of harmony in the first body paragraph and the value of personal growth through disagreement in the second. However, the development is somewhat limited; for instance, the reference to the 'World Health Organisation' is a generic claim that lacks specific detail or logical connection to the argument. While the position is clear throughout, the explanation of why one view might be superior could be more deeply explored to reach a higher band. Overall, all parts of the prompt are addressed adequately.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, with each focusing on a distinct aspect of the prompt. There is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Furthermore', and 'For instance' are used to link sentences and paragraphs. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing (e.g., 'they enables one make' lacks a clear antecedent). Despite these minor flaws, the structure is coherent and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally sufficient to convey the intended meaning, though it lacks sophistication. There are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'have differents opinions' (should be 'different') and 'has the same idea and though' (should be 'thoughts'). The range is adequate for the task, but the student relies on relatively simple vocabulary. To improve, the student should focus on using more precise academic collocations and ensuring correct word forms, as the current errors occasionally draw attention to the language rather than the content.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'friends that has', 'they enables one make', 'it enhance'). These errors are persistent throughout the text. While the meaning remains clear and communication is not impeded, the high frequency of these basic errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. More attention to verb endings and pluralization is necessary to improve accuracy.
