IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people think it's better to choose friends who always have the same opinions as them. Other people believe it's good to have friends who sometimes disagree with them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In the modern era, every individual has a range of perspectives. It has been argued that it is a better option to choose friends who have the same opinion as them; however, it is widely believed that it is good to have close friends who sometimes does not agree with their opinion. According to my perspective, it is better to choose individuals who disagree with your viewpoint because in real means they are your friends, and they will guide you to follow right path and where you are distracted from your goals. Both sides of this argument will be discussed in the following paragraphs, and I will give my point of view about the notion mentioned above.

To commence with, a major section of society thinks that choosing friends who always have the same perspective is beneficial because they can understand each other more easily and avoid unnecessary arguments. For instance, if both friends have similar views about how to spend their free time, they can make plans without ego clashes. As a result, their friendship may become stronger because they feel comfortable to share their interest with each other.

On the other hand, having different perspective can be healthy because it gives us an opportunity to learn from one another. For example, if two persons disagree about how to solve a problem, they can share their ideas and help each other to find an effective solution to a problem instead of just blindly following other person's way of thinking. Consequently, it will develop better understanding and it will a true bond.

According to my way of thinking, I believe it is much better to have friends which has a different perspective than yours because in real -life problems with wide range of ideas you can figure out what is best for you in that circumstance.

To conclude, their is two viewpoint on side it is believed that best friends with same opinion is better while on the other side disagree with them. For better mutual understanding and deep connection friends with similar ideas are best but for making real bond it is best to have friend with different perspective as they are deeply connected from their roots.

Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'On the other hand', and 'Consequently' are used to guide the reader. However, there are instances where the flow is slightly mechanical or the referencing is slightly unclear, such as in the final paragraph where the sentence structure becomes fragmented. Despite these minor issues, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. The student uses some relevant terms like 'perspectives', 'mutual understanding', and 'circumstance'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'in real means' instead of 'in reality' or 'in truth', and 'deeply connected from their roots'. The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but it lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band. There are no significant spelling errors, but the overall lexical variety is somewhat limited.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that persist. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('friends who sometimes does not agree', 'friends which has a different perspective') and article usage errors ('it will a true bond', 'their is two viewpoint'). Punctuation is also inconsistent in places. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent the essay from reaching a higher band for grammatical accuracy.
