Student answer (Band 6.5)

One group of the community believes that it is easy to communicate with those friends who share the same thinking as us. But another group says that if we have people who think the opposite of what we think is better. In my opinion, the friends who have different thinking from me are better to do friendship with them. I will discuss both the views and will shed light on my opinions in the upcoming paragraphs.

Firstly, some individuals think that it is easy to share anything with those friends who have the same opinions as us. Therefore, they will not make fun of any situation, because they will do the same thing we are doing in any situation. Moreover, if we are making any important decision, they will give us support rather than interrupting us, because we are sharing the same mentality.

On the contrary, some people believe in making friends who have different mindsets and who do not support us in some decisions. To illustrate, it is well said that true friends are those who tell you the truth on your face. If we are doing something wrong, our good friends should tell us right way, or they can disagree with any of our decisions. In that way, having a friend who have different thoughts can teach us better lessons in our life and can help us to take right decisions.

In short, in my opinion, having a friend who disagree with me sometimes is not bad at all, because I cannot always be right. My friends can correct me, they can disagree with me, and it will be helpful for me in my life. Both views have their own importance in people's lives because they have different taste in making friends.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task. You clearly discuss both views and provide a personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the comfort of shared opinions versus the growth provided by constructive disagreement. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the argument regarding 'making fun of any situation' is a bit simplistic. To reach a higher band, you should aim to extend your points with more nuanced examples or deeper analysis of the psychological benefits of these friendship dynamics. Your position is clear throughout the essay, which is a strength.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'On the contrary', and 'In short' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, though some transitions could be more sophisticated. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the relationship between ideas is more fluid rather than relying on simple sequence markers.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific language like 'mentality', 'mindsets', and 'disagree'. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive and lacks the precision or 'less common' items required for higher bands. There are also minor issues with word choice, such as 'do friendship with them' (better: 'form friendships') and 'tell you the truth on your face' (better: 'tell you the truth to your face'). Expanding your range of collocations would significantly improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'if we have people who think the opposite... is better' (missing subject/verb agreement) and 'a friend who have different thoughts' (should be 'has'). Punctuation is generally functional, but some sentences are slightly awkward in their construction. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of relative clauses. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you move into the 7.0 band.
