Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that opinions of friends should match to each other. On the other hand, some people opine that it is better to have difference in opinions among friends. However, I believe that opinions are a personal choice of an individual, and friendship should remain unaffected.

The former view about doing friendship with whom one share same thoughts is good, as they are more likely chances of having strong bond. When two people share same type of thoughts they can exchange their feelings and emotions without the fear of judgment, such type of relations often avoid conflicts and confusion which help to develop a healthy relation. For example, in school likely minded, children often takes interest in each other and help more. Further, sharing good relations creates a healthy and positive society.

The other people argue that having different opinions are necessary, as they help to evaluate an event from a different perspective. There is always a good and a bad side of everything, and it is necessary to check the thing from different angle. For instance, stealing a thing from a shop and a bank robbery are two different things. Different laws and punishment is prefered to evaluate both. one is a serious crime and another one is not much serious. Another reason is that sometimes the person who disagree with you does not intent to harm you. In some situation, we cannot evaluate ourself whether we are wrong or right.

In my opinion, having a different point of view does not mean that one cannot be friends together. opinions are a personal thing and no one should feel affected by someone's different perspective.

In conclusion, choosing a friend on the basis of their opinion has their own benefits and drawbacks. However, I believe that individuals should be unaffected by their friends' opinion.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The argument for having friends with different opinions is supported by an example regarding crime, which is slightly tangential and not fully relevant to the context of personal friendship. While the position is clear, the explanation of why one might prefer different opinions could be more deeply explored to reach a higher band. The conclusion is brief but effectively summarizes the stance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'For example', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and there are instances where the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the discussion of crime and the point about intent is abrupt. Overall, the progression of ideas is coherent, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'evaluate' and 'perspective', but there are also some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'doing friendship' instead of 'forming friendships' and 'not much serious' instead of 'less serious'. The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but more precise and varied vocabulary would be needed to move into the higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('children often takes interest') and article usage ('in school likely minded, children'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are minor errors such as missing spaces after periods. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. A greater variety of error-free complex structures would be required for a band 7.
