IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people think it's better to choose friends who always have the same opinions as them. Other people believe it's good to have friends who sometimes disagree with them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 6.0)

People have different views about whether to have friends who has distinct behaviour or same nature to make decisions regarding something. Although there are valid arguments on both sides, I believe that having companions who has opposite opinions have better relationships bonds.

On the one hand, there are several reasons why people may agree on better to have friends with same thinking. The primary reason is conflict free conversations and saves times for instant results. This means when both are agreed on same thing they don't have to fight upon little things which not only make their time but also enhance their knowledge and positive bond. For instance, if both person are bookworm they usually spend most of their time in the library and giving suggestions about books which directly buildup their knowledge.

On the other hand, others argue that diverse behaviour of friends are exceptional, and I strongly believe in it. One major reason is friends with dissimilar thoughts can stand with their friends in every rough and tough conditions. Furthermore, having extrovert friend helps you to feel stronger in strange locations. This is particularly evident if one person is feeling low then the other one motivate him/her as he/she is is emotionally stronger than the friend who is a overthinker or felt coward in unexpected situations. Consequently, one is practicable to have some decisions instantly which directly influence other who is intellectual or depend on things to do by the time.

Taking everything into consideration, both views have merits. I believe having companions of discrete actions is more convincing.

For instance, the transition into the second body paragraph introduces ideas about extroverts and overthinkers rather than maintaining a tight focus on differing opinions. Furthermore, some sentences lack smooth internal connection, leading to a mechanical flow in places. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate introduction, body points, and conclusion, fulfilling the requirements for a Band 6 score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating phrases like 'conflict free conversations', 'rough and tough conditions', and 'overthinker'. There are, however, noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as writing 'friends who has distinct behaviour' instead of 'have', and using 'practicable' where 'practical' or 'easier' might be more suitable. Spelling is generally accurate, but the frequent slips in word formation and collocation prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher band level. The lexical range is minimally sufficient to convey the intended meaning, aligning with Band 6 criteria.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some capability with subordinate clauses as seen in 'This means when both are agreed on same thing they don't have to fight...'.
