Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student addresses both views regarding friendship types and successfully presents a personal opinion in the introduction, body paragraph three, and the conclusion, satisfying the core requirements of the prompt. Ideas are extended, such as discussing how similar opinions build confidence and how differing opinions foster cognitive development and push people out of their comfort zones. However, some arguments tend to over-generalise or remain slightly under-developed, and the example provided regarding the oxford university statistic lacks sufficient elaboration to reach a higher band. Overall, the task is addressed adequately throughout, aligning closely with the Band 6 descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing separating the introduction, the two body viewpoints, and the conclusion. There is a clear logical progression from discussing supportive identical-opinion friendships to contrasting them with challenging, growth-oriented friendships. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty, as evidenced by awkward transitional phrases like 'Commencing with the most prominent reason' and punctuation errors near the beginning (e.g. ' ;However '). Furthermore, referencing and pronoun usage are occasionally unclear, such as ambiguous pronoun links in the final body paragraph. These issues place the response firmly in the Band 6 descriptor category for cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'cognitive knowledge', 'comfort zone', and 'concrete conclusion'. However, there are numerous word choice, collocation, and word-formation errors throughout the text, such as 'dislike your opinions' instead of 'disagree with your opinions', 'Indulge in these kind' instead of 'Indulging in these kinds', and 'opine' used as a noun. Spelling and morphological slips are noticeable (e.g. 'oxford university' uncapitalised, 'same opine'), though they generally do not impede overall communication. This matches the characteristics of Band 5.5 to 6.0, leaning towards a solid Band 6 for adequate breadth.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilising subordinating conjunctions such as 'Although' and 'even though'. However, grammatical control is inconsistent, and the text contains several noticeable errors in punctuation, subject-verb agreement, and clause structure. Examples include 'it is an argued whether', 'personality insist to think', and missing articles or incorrect pluralisation ('different mindset personality'). Punctuation is also problematic in places, notably with spacing around semicolons and commas. While complex sentences are attempted, errors are frequent enough to cause occasional difficulty for the reader, placing the grammar score at Band 5.5.
