Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Madam,
I am writing you this letter to provide my feedback on a cookery course I took at your cookery school.
I joined this course as a beginner with no prior experience of taking such courses. One of my friends recommended your school to me and I must say, I enjoyed attending tthe course. I used to think that cooking is hard and is not meant for everyone to do. But after taking this course, my views changed. I am inspired by the way your teachers supported every student, making this course a joyful experience to have.
After attending your course, I have started to make use of the skills I learnt. Now, I am able to make atleast two dishes per day based on the easy-to-make recipes provided by the teachers. Before taking the course, I only knew Asian cuisine but now I can cook Italian as well.
Based on this experience at your school, I would like to register for an upcoming course focusing on Seafood. I am sure it will be fun to attend and learn from it.
Yours sincerely,
Shazia

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requested points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose: you explain what you enjoyed, describe your cooking since the course, and request a seafood course. The account of how the teachers supported students and changed your view of cooking gives the positive feedback some personal detail. You also make your progress concrete by mentioning two dishes a day and the move from Asian to Italian cuisine. The final suggestion is relevant, though the reason for choosing seafood is only briefly stated, and the enjoyment of the course could be illustrated with a specific activity or skill. Developing these details further would make the response more fully supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The information is arranged in a clear sequence: the opening states the purpose, the next paragraph describes the course, the following paragraph explains how you have used the skills, and the final paragraph makes a future-course request. Linking phrases such as “After attending your course” and “Based on this experience” help signal the progression, while the paragraphs each have a distinct focus. The contrast between your earlier view of cooking and your changed opinion also supports the flow. To make the organisation even more polished, connect the seafood request more explicitly to your current cooking interests, and avoid relying on repeated references to “course” and “course.” Overall, the letter is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a feedback letter, including relevant terms such as “beginner,” “prior experience,” “recipes,” and “Asian cuisine.” Phrases such as “my views changed” communicate your response clearly, and the reader can understand your meaning throughout. However, some wording is repetitive or not quite natural: “attending the course” and “a joyful experience to have” could be expressed more precisely, while “make use of the skills” is less idiomatic than a more direct alternative. There are also spelling slips in “tthe” and “atleast.” Greater accuracy in spelling and more natural collocations would strengthen the vocabulary control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The letter includes a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and several sentences are controlled well, such as “One of my friends recommended your school to me” and “Before taking the course, I only knew Asian cuisine but now I can cook Italian as well.” The contrast between past experience and present ability is generally clear. Some grammatical choices need attention: “I am writing you this letter” is better formed as “I am writing this letter to you,” and “I used to think that cooking is hard” would be more consistent as “cooking was hard.” The phrase “inspired by the way your teachers supported every student, making this course…” also leaves the relationship between the ideas slightly unclear. More consistent tense use and careful sentence construction would improve accuracy.
