Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to express my positive feedback for the cookery school.

Recently, I completed a short cookery course in your school and I enjoyed during the course. The instructor taught us from basic to advanced level. Specifically, I liked the friendly atmosphere and instructor’s behaviour. Moreover, I learned more tricks and tips to make delicious meals.

Previously, I was afraid to cook because I didn’t know the recipe and ingredients. However, after courses every morning I started to make breakfast and lunch. My mother is feeling proud for cooking skills.

I would like to suggest you that please start new cookery course such as cake baking. This course would help for beginners students. It could be increase your school popularity. Most students would attend the course and give positive feedback.

I hope you will consider my suggestion and thank you for your time and support.

Yours faithfully,

Prajakta Sali

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly describe your enjoyment of the course, explain your current cooking habits, and suggest a new course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a course director. To improve, you could provide more specific details about what you enjoyed, such as a particular dish you learned to prepare, rather than general comments about the instructor's behavior. This would help to fully develop your ideas and move into a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover', 'However', and 'Specifically' to link your ideas. However, the flow between some sentences is slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the transition between your past experience and your current cooking habits is smoother. Overall, the message is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'friendly atmosphere' and 'delicious meals' are appropriate. However, there are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'instructor’s behaviour' (which is slightly unnatural in this context; 'teaching style' would be better) and 'increase your school popularity' (which should be 'increase the popularity of your school'). Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise collocations would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I enjoyed during the course' (missing object), 'after courses' (should be 'after the course'), and 'help for beginners students' (should be 'help beginner students'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures with greater accuracy.
