Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam

I am writing this letter to express my feedback about the cookery course which I have done recently from your school. I did this course just to enhance my cookery skills as I love cooking.

When I started this course I did not know how to make Chinese food, so I asked from my trainer and they taught me very well. Moreover they used good quality of products in the food doesn't matter for them if they are teaching us.

Apart from this, I have made different dishes during this course such as Italian, Mexican and Canadian. They taught me different ways to make all the dishes. For example if we are making pizza and we do not have pizza sauce then we can make that sauce by ourselves.

Lastly, I want to give my own opinion as some people do not like the vegetarian food, thus they should start Non veg courses as well due to which more and more people will attract to this course.

Thanks

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt, which is a positive start. You described what you enjoyed, mentioned your cooking frequency (though this was implied rather than explicitly stated), and suggested a new course. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, you mention making Italian, Mexican, and Canadian dishes, but you do not explain why you enjoyed these specifically. Additionally, the second bullet point regarding how much you have cooked since the course is missing; you should have explicitly stated, for example, 'I have been cooking at home three times a week since the course finished.' To reach a higher band, ensure each bullet point is fully expanded with specific details.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure, and you have used some basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover,' 'Apart from this,' and 'Lastly' to signal new points. However, the paragraphing is insufficient; the entire body of the letter is presented as one block, which makes it harder to read. You should separate the introduction, the three main points, and the closing into distinct paragraphs. Furthermore, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'due to which more and more people will attract to this course.' Improving your paragraphing and using a wider variety of linking phrases will help your ideas flow more naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'cookery skills,' 'Chinese food,' and 'vegetarian.' However, there are instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'good quality of products' (should be 'high-quality ingredients') and 'people will attract to this course' (should be 'people will be attracted to this course'). To improve, focus on learning common collocations—words that naturally go together—and try to incorporate more precise adjectives and verbs to describe your experiences rather than relying on simple, repetitive language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. For example, 'I have done recently from your school' is awkward; 'I recently completed at your school' would be more accurate. You also have issues with articles and prepositions, such as 'in the food doesn't matter for them' and 'some people do not like the vegetarian food' (the article 'the' is unnecessary here). While these errors do not prevent the message from being understood, they occur frequently enough to keep the score in the 6.0 range. Focus on subject-verb agreement and correct article usage.
