Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I am writing this letter to provide you the review regarding the cooking course I had joined with your institution six months ago.

Firstly, I would like to thank you for having me in this course because it has given me an opportunity to build my culinary skills. Additionally, I have had multiple positive experiences during this course. One thing I would throw light on is co-operation among the team members that helped me to build my communication skills and enhanced my confidence.

After finishing my course, since I was good at making custard cake, I decided to add that recipe in my father's bakery which turned out significantly demanding and helped to boost my family business.

I could vividly remember that most of your students were Indian but I have not gotten any chance to grasp any recipes from their culture as in our syllabus, most of the cuisines were from western part of the world. Moreover, I would recommend you to consider having Indian authentic dishes in your next cooking session which would help the students to sharpen their skills as I did.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Regards,

TAH

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the positive aspects of the course, specifically the teamwork and communication skills. You also explained your post-course cooking activities, noting the success of the custard cake in your family business. Finally, you provided a clear suggestion for an Indian cuisine course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a course director. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your experience and your request for future curriculum changes. You have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Additionally', 'After finishing', and 'Moreover' to guide the reader through your points. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to reach a higher band. For instance, the connection between the custard cake and the family business is clear, but the transition to the suggestion about Indian cuisine is slightly abrupt. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'culinary skills', 'vividly remember', and 'authentic dishes' are used correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'significantly demanding' (which is slightly unnatural in this context; 'highly popular' or 'in high demand' would be better) and 'throw light on' (which is a bit idiomatic for this formal context). However, these do not impede communication. You have sufficient vocabulary to express your ideas clearly and with some precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'provide you the review' (should be 'provide you with a review') and 'gotten any chance' (should be 'had any chance'). Additionally, 'western part of the world' requires an article ('the western part'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. The punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentence variety shows an attempt to use more complex structures, which is a positive feature of your writing.
