IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You recently did a short cookery course. The cookery school has asked for your feedback on this course. Write a letter to the course director at the cookery school. In your letter
- describe what you enjoyed about the course
- say how much cooking you've done since the course
- suggest another cookery course you’d like the school to offer
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to express how cheerful I was when I finished your cookery class. I have done a short course at your school and I genuinely believe it was the best decision I have ever made.
On 29 June, 2026, I enrolled at your school to improve my Indian style cooking skills. I have seen significant improvement on my techniques. Apart from that, I enjoyed a lot throughout the course specially when you scheduled the fun banter competitions. Owing to that, it generates so much positivity while cooking. After that, I have served many people by doing catering. Additionally, I won the last year master chef of London championship.
Recently, I saw your upcoming advertisement for Italian course. I am so much excited for that as I love their food and decorations. Please provide me some additional information if possible.
Once again, I really appreciate your training and I would like to stay in touch with you.
Yours faithfully,
Raj.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You described your enjoyment of the course, mentioned your subsequent cooking activities, and suggested a future course. However, the development of these points is somewhat uneven. While you mention winning a championship, the connection between the course and this achievement is slightly abrupt. Additionally, the prompt asked you to suggest another course you would like the school to offer, but you instead asked for information about an Italian course they are already advertising. To improve, ensure your suggestions are original and clearly linked to the school's offerings.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Apart from that', 'Owing to that', and 'Additionally' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced, such as 'After that' to start a sentence about your catering experience. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the flow between sentences is more natural and less repetitive.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'enrolled', 'significant improvement', and 'catering'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'cheerful' to describe your feelings about finishing a class (which usually implies a state of being rather than a reaction to an event) and 'decorations' when referring to food (likely meaning 'presentation'). The phrase 'fun banter competitions' is a bit informal but fits the context of a friendly letter. To improve, work on using more precise collocations and ensuring that your word choices are contextually appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I have seen significant improvement on my techniques' (should be 'in my techniques') and 'I am so much excited' (should be 'I am so excited'). The tense usage is generally consistent, though there are occasional slips. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions to enhance the accuracy of your writing.
