Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this letter finds you in the pink of health. I am writing in order to provide my feedback regarding a short-term culinary course I attended at your catering school.

Firstly, I am grateful and thankful for participating in this course as it has enhanced my culinary skills as it is significant for me because I am planning to pursue my further education at overseas. I loved everything about the course, however, the part which I enjoyed the most was to make a special Korean dish- Sushi. Since it is in the trend now, it was enjoyable and joyous experience.

After completing the course successfully, I have been cooking regularly four to five times a week. I have started to make various varieties of cuisines for my friends and family members. They are amused to see my cooking and this makes me happier.

Since, it was the memorable experience, I would like to suggest that if the culinary school can offer another cookery course on an advanced level.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Juhi Nayak

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe your enjoyment of the sushi-making portion, state your current cooking frequency, and propose an advanced course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the suggestion for an advanced course is quite brief. To reach a higher band, you could elaborate on what specific skills or techniques you would like to see covered in an advanced curriculum to provide a more comprehensive and persuasive suggestion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'After completing', and 'Since', which help the reader follow your ideas. However, the flow between some sentences feels slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your transition words and ensure that the connection between your personal motivation for the course and the specific skills learned is more fluidly integrated.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using phrases like 'culinary skills' and 'short-term culinary course'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'various varieties' (which is redundant) and 'pursue my further education at overseas' (should be 'abroad' or 'overseas'). While you attempt some idiomatic language ('in the pink of health'), it feels slightly out of place in this specific context. Focusing on more precise collocations will help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'the part which I enjoyed the most was to make' (should be 'was making'), 'at overseas' (preposition error), and 'it was the memorable experience' (article error). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, focus on refining your use of articles and prepositions, and ensure that your verb forms consistently match the intended structure of your sentences.
