Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to give my valuable feedback on the short cookery course I took at your school. Although, it was a short course but there were many insightful learnings.

Firstly, I was always intrigued about Indian cuisine. One thing I enjoyed the most about the course was the variety of spices that were used to cook the food. The perfect balance of aroma and flavor.

Since the day I have completed my course. I have been cooking at least thrice a week. It not only helps build my confidence but also now i can support with the household chores.

Lastly, while I was interested in learning a different type of cuisine preferably Italian which is somehow similar to Indian cuisine, because they too have a lot to offer in terms of herbs and spices. I noticed the school does not offer Italian cookery course. I would suggest if that could be added in future.

In conclusion, the course taught me to be self independent, boost my confidence and learn more about the world. I would recommend this course to my friends and family.

Yours faithfully,

Tom Williams.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described your enjoyment of the Indian cuisine module, specified the frequency of your home cooking, and provided a clear suggestion for an Italian course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a course director. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail on the 'insightful learnings' mentioned in the introduction to further develop your ideas, as the current explanation of the spices is brief. Overall, the task is fully addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. You use transition signals such as 'Firstly', 'Since the day', 'Lastly', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader through your points. However, there are some minor issues with sentence-level cohesion. For example, the sentence 'Although, it was a short course but there were many insightful learnings' contains a redundant conjunction structure ('Although... but'). Additionally, some sentences are fragmented, such as 'The perfect balance of aroma and flavor', which lacks a main verb. Improving the flow between these fragments and their preceding sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'intrigued', 'cuisine', 'aroma', and 'household chores'. The language is generally natural and appropriate for the context. There are no significant errors that impede communication. To improve, you could incorporate more precise collocations or less common lexical items to show greater flexibility. For instance, instead of 'support with the household chores', you could use 'contribute to meal preparation'. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'Although, it was a short course but...' is grammatically incorrect; it should be 'Although it was a short course, there were...'. There are also punctuation issues, such as starting a new sentence with 'I' after 'Since the day I have completed my course.' and using 'i' in lowercase. Furthermore, the sentence 'I would suggest if that could be added in future' is slightly awkward. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and avoiding sentence fragments will help improve your accuracy.
