IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You recently did a short cookery course. The cookery school has asked for your feedback on this course. Write a letter to the course director at the cookery school. In your letter

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to give a feedback on the cookery course that I have recently done at your school.

I would really appreciate the quality teaching and the way of making students understand if someone feels difficult to understand. Teachers not only helped me in practicals which I did in class but also cleared my all doubts which I came across while studying at home. That behaviour of staff members made my course more enjoyable.

I have made several types of food after learning, including pasta, pizza, tacos and burritos. Although I was not that confident at first when I joined tha school, after getting proper information I have prepared many traditional food of other countries on my own.

People are now more cautious about their health, they prefer to consume vegan diet. Many youngsters are looking for a course which focuses on nutritional values along with the information regarding food which

could be allergic to a few people. It would be better if your school offers a Nutritional and Diet course to young learners.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours faithfully,

Dharmveer Singh.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described what you enjoyed about the course (the quality of teaching and support), mentioned your cooking practice since the course (pasta, pizza, etc.), and suggested a new course (Nutritional and Diet course). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a course director. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, meeting the requirements of the task effectively. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail regarding the specific 'nutritional values' you would like to see in the suggested course to further develop your ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each bullet point, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a single topic, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'not only... but also', and 'In addition' (implied). However, the transition between the second and third paragraph could be smoother. The use of paragraphing is appropriate for a letter format, and the overall progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. You use topic-specific terms like 'nutritional values', 'practical', and 'cautious'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'give a feedback' (should be 'provide feedback') and 'cleared my all doubts' (should be 'cleared all my doubts'). While you attempt to use some less common vocabulary, there is room for more precise collocations. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but a wider range of sophisticated synonyms would help elevate the response to a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'if someone feels difficult to understand' (should be 'if someone finds it difficult to understand') and 'prepared many traditional food' (should be 'prepared many traditional dishes'). Additionally, 'the school' is misspelled as 'tha school'. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct usage of countable versus uncountable nouns, such as 'food' versus 'dishes'.
