Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to you to provide feedback about cookery course which I had recently completed from your institution.

Since I have joined the course I am able to cook various types of delicious dishes. However, this course assist me to boost my culinary skills. Although I learnt practically in the kitchen, theoretical lectures was helpfull. Atmosphere of the classroom was plenty geod which I enjoyed most of the time.

In my spare time I have shared my cooking experience at home while learning at school. In the last days of course I cooked pizza at home and have positive comments about my cooking skills from

my parents.

One more thing I would like to suggest you is that your school should provide some international food preparation skills rather than focusing on national food.

I hope you would consider my suggestion and add some extra cooking courses.

Yours faithfully,

Jag

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task: describing what you enjoyed, mentioning your cooking practice since the course, and suggesting a new course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, when describing what you enjoyed, you mention the 'atmosphere' and 'theoretical lectures,' but providing more specific details about what made them enjoyable would have strengthened your response. Similarly, your suggestion for international food could be expanded by explaining why this would be beneficial for students. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task, but further elaboration would lead to a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each addressing a specific part of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'However,' 'Although,' and 'In my spare time' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally clear, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the connection between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between your cooking experience and the suggestion for a new course is abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'this course') is always precise will help improve the overall flow and coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your ideas effectively, such as 'culinary skills,' 'theoretical lectures,' and 'institution.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and spelling, such as 'plenty geod' (likely meant 'very good') and 'helpfull' (spelled 'helpful'). Some phrases are slightly unnatural, such as 'provide some international food preparation skills,' which could be phrased more precisely. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring correct spelling of common adjectives. Your vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'cookery course which I had recently completed' (missing an article), 'this course assist me' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'theoretical lectures was helpfull' (subject-verb agreement error). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are frequent enough to impact the overall accuracy. To improve, pay closer attention to verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and the correct use of articles. Focusing on these foundational areas will help you produce more error-free sentences.
