Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to provide my feedback on recently held cookery classes by Mr. Thomson. I enjoyed the entire session, he showed us how we can make an italian style pizza at home.

Firstly, when I move to Toronto last summer, I was rookie in cooking department. From the last 3 months, I have seen my cooking skills rising exponentially. I have been cooking cuisines from around the world as pasta, pizza, falafel, pad thai, dosa and much more. Secondly, I have been cooking at home and it has helped me to save significantly on my dinner expenses and making my financials stronger. Furthermore, the cookery class has improved my cooking skills and has improved my diet, as I am focused to eat more clean and home cook food

Furthermore, I would be grateful if you could arrange a cheesecake making classes early next month.

Should you require any more information, I am happy to assist you further. My cousin loves eating it, and I would like to bake one for him.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Ryan.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described your enjoyment of the pizza session, explained your increased cooking frequency, and suggested a cheesecake course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a course director. To reach a higher band, ensure that the development of ideas is more balanced. For instance, the section on how much you have cooked since the course is quite detailed, whereas the description of what you enjoyed about the course is relatively brief. Expanding slightly on the specific techniques or teaching style you appreciated would provide a more comprehensive response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader through your points. However, the paragraphing is slightly inconsistent; the request for a cheesecake class is separated from the rest of the body, and the sentence about your cousin feels like an afterthought that disrupts the flow of the paragraph. Using more varied transition phrases and ensuring that each paragraph focuses on a single, unified theme would improve the overall structure and flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'exponentially', 'significantly', and 'financials'. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'rookie in cooking department' (should be 'a novice in the kitchen') and 'eat more clean' (should be 'eat cleaner' or 'eat more cleanly'). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, some phrases sound slightly unnatural. Focusing on more precise collocations and ensuring that adjectives and adverbs are used in their correct forms will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'when I move to Toronto' should be 'when I moved to Toronto', and 'from the last 3 months' should be 'over the last 3 months'. Additionally, there are punctuation and capitalization errors, such as 'italian' (should be 'Italian') and 'home cook food' (should be 'home-cooked food'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Proofreading for verb tense consistency and basic article usage is recommended.
