Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter to give the recent feedback on cookery course which i completed last week. It was an amazing experience. This course enhance my culinary skills and taught me about the bakery course. This was the 4-week course. I enjoyed it. I came to know about the basic concept of baking which was my weaker section.

After the completion of course, i gain enough knowledge about the baking. I started making cupcakes then did various modifications. I have seen changes in baking as compared to past. I applied the tricks and tips which was taught during the class and it works. I am also interested in your meal preparation cookery course which is going to start from next week. I would like to know more details about it. Let me know the registration process of this course.

Thank you for your consideration and time.

Yours faithfully,

Sahista

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt: describing what you enjoyed, mentioning your cooking practice since the course, and suggesting a new course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a course director. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention enjoying the course, you could have provided more specific details about the teaching style or the atmosphere to better engage the reader. Similarly, your suggestion for a new course is clear, but adding a brief reason why you believe it would be popular would have strengthened the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening and closing. Paragraphing is used to separate the different points, which helps the reader follow your ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical. You rely heavily on simple sentence structures and basic transitions. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words such as 'furthermore', 'consequently', or 'in addition' to connect your sentences more fluidly. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the flow could be improved by varying the sentence length and structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using words like 'culinary', 'modifications', and 'consideration' correctly. However, there are some instances of repetitive or slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'the recent feedback on cookery course' (missing an article) and 'the basic concept of baking'. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding basic verbs like 'did' or 'taught'. Your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'This was the 4-week course' (should be 'a 4-week course'), 'i gain enough knowledge' (tense error: should be 'gained'), and 'the tricks and tips which was taught' (subject-verb agreement error: should be 'were taught'). Additionally, the personal pronoun 'I' must always be capitalized. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are frequent enough to limit your score in this criterion.
