Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam
I hope you are doing good. I writing this letter to give my feedback for the cookery course that i have completed in your institute. I have learned alot of practical knowledge from this course. The most exciting part of this course was making bridge cake.
During the course i never missed a single class. I always enjoy learning new recipe and now i able to make 30 types of cake with different design. I am also planning to open a bakery in my home town, since there is not a single bakery near to our city.
I also want to recommend one course that school should offer to future students that is related to fish. During my course i had notice that your school doesn't provide any course which contain fish, so that is why i want you to add on this one.
Your Sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt: describing what you enjoyed, mentioning your cooking practice since the course, and suggesting a new course. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a course director. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention enjoying the 'bridge cake' (likely sponge cake), you could have provided more detail on why it was enjoyable. Similarly, your suggestion for a fish course is clear, but explaining why you believe this would be a popular addition would have strengthened the response. Overall, the task is fully addressed, but the ideas could be expanded further to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on one of the required points. You use some basic cohesive devices, such as 'During the course' and 'I also want to', which help the reader follow your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the use of linking words is limited. To improve, try to use a wider variety of cohesive devices (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in addition to this') to connect your thoughts more fluidly. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'practical knowledge', 'recipe', and 'bakery'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'doing good' instead of 'doing well' and 'bridge cake' (which may be a misspelling or misuse). To achieve a higher band, you should aim to use a wider range of vocabulary and ensure that your word choices are precise and natural. Avoid repetitive phrasing and try to incorporate more sophisticated adjectives or verbs to describe your experiences.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'I writing this letter' (missing auxiliary verb), 'i have completed' (lowercase 'i'), 'i never missed' (lowercase 'i'), and 'i had notice' (incorrect verb tense). These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, consistent use of capital letters for the pronoun 'I', and correct verb tense usage. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will help you reach a higher band.
