Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to express my gratitude towards the cookery course that I just completed two weeks back. I would like to thank to all the members and the teachers for showering so much love and attention.

Firstly, I would like to highlight about the environment which according to me is the utmost priority in any working place. All the teachers were so supportive towards every student attending the course by providing the extra attention by allotting them one on one session with each other. They offered all the essentials that were required during the classes with no extra cost included.

Furthermore, I learnt a lot dishes and sweets that were taught to me during the classes. I even tried making cookies, pastries and cakes at my home got approved by my mother. Ever since any guest arrive at our home I always feel so much delighted to show my cooking skills and present them with full plating decor.

Lastly, I would suggest school should also consider baking courses coming Fall. During the birthdays it will be the best to make the cake at home and serve with full love. Moreover its my passion too to learn baking. School should consider these courses. Therefore, one more skill will be included into my resume.

It was a great opportunity for me that I developed in myself. I would be highly thankful to each and every member of the course for such an incredible experience

Yours Faithfully,

Ridhima.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described what you enjoyed (the environment and support), mentioned your cooking practice since the course, and suggested a new baking course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a course director. However, some ideas could be developed further; for instance, explaining why you specifically enjoyed the 'one-on-one' sessions or detailing the types of dishes you would like to learn in a baking course would add more depth. Overall, the response is clear and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the task. You use transition words like 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', and 'Lastly' to guide the reader through your points. While the structure is sound, the flow between some sentences is slightly mechanical. For example, the transition between discussing your home cooking and the suggestion for a new course could be smoother. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as 'that I developed in myself' in the penultimate paragraph, which is a bit vague. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'gratitude', 'supportive', and 'opportunity'. However, there are some instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'showering so much love and attention' (which is a bit informal/unnatural in this context) and 'full plating decor'. There are also minor errors in collocation, such as 'learnt a lot dishes' instead of 'learnt to make many dishes'. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding informal expressions in a formal letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. For example, 'thank to all the members' should be 'thank all the members', and 'any guest arrive' should be 'any guest arrives'. There are also issues with prepositions and articles, such as 'at my home' (should be 'at home') and 'into my resume' (should be 'on my resume'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage will help improve your accuracy.
