Student answer (Band 6.5)

dear sir/madam,

hey my name is Monil and i hope you are doing well. Few week ago I registered on limited time cookery course and i love to inform you that i love that course.

Here is my honest review about course is it is one the best investment i ever done and the instructors are pretty friendly and knowledgeable. they taught you verry patiently and give you brief information about dishes and all. there were so many new continental food dishes i leant to make. most importantly the atmosphere of institute was amazing and energetic. generally I was eating in restaurant or ordering something from online but after that course I prefer to cook my food twice or thrice time in a week and now i enjoy cooking.

in the institute there are so many other courses available but next course I will choose culinary art because i personally think its more important in cooking is that how to cut vegetables or meat and so on.

thank you so much for giving this opportunity to learn my hidden skills.

yours faithfully,

Monil

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: describing the course, detailing post-course cooking habits, and suggesting a future course. The tone is appropriate for a letter, although it leans slightly informal. The ideas are relevant and clearly communicated, though the development of the suggestion for a 'culinary art' course could be more detailed to fully meet the requirements of a Band 7. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and the reader is left with a good understanding of your experience.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat limited and occasionally mechanical. For example, the transition between the review of the course and your current cooking habits could be smoother. While you use basic linking words like 'most importantly' and 'generally', the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of cohesive devices to connect ideas more fluidly. Paragraphing is present but could be more distinct.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'knowledgeable', 'continental', and 'energetic'. There are some spelling errors ('leant' instead of 'learnt', 'verry') and minor word choice issues, such as 'limited time cookery course' instead of 'short-term' or 'intensive' course. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. Focusing on collocations and more sophisticated synonyms will help elevate your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('on limited time cookery course'), incorrect verb tenses ('i ever done'), and capitalization issues ('i', 'dear sir/madam'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are noticeable throughout the text. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, as these are foundational elements that currently limit your score.
