Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response is completely off-topic. The task required a formal letter to a cookery school director providing feedback on a course, describing what was enjoyed, stating how much cooking has been done since, and suggesting a new course. Instead, the student wrote an informal, personal letter to a friend named 'Jass' about a new job and a car. Because the response fails to address any of the bullet points or the intended audience, it does not meet the requirements of the task. Additionally, the response is significantly under the 150-word minimum, which further impacts the score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The letter is divided into short, disjointed paragraphs. While there is a basic attempt at structure, the lack of logical progression and the failure to address the prompt make the overall coherence very weak. Cohesive devices are largely absent or misused, such as the abrupt transition 'okay.let me know'. The referencing is confusing because the letter is addressed to a 'friend' rather than the course director, making the flow of ideas irrelevant to the task instructions.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is very basic and repetitive, consisting mostly of simple, everyday language. There are several spelling errors, such as 'latter' instead of 'letter', 'coffie' instead of 'coffee', and 'aboy' instead of 'about'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to express complex ideas, and the tone is entirely inappropriate for the requested formal letter format. The student struggles to use words accurately, which limits the ability to convey meaning effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The grammar is consistently weak throughout the text. There are frequent errors in sentence structure, punctuation, and verb tense, such as 'It is been so long since we last meet' (should be 'It has been... since we last met') and 'i will give your advise' (should be 'advice'). Capitalization is inconsistent, and the use of informal abbreviations like 'u' is inappropriate for an IELTS task. The range of structures is limited to simple sentences, and the high frequency of errors makes the text difficult to read.
