Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well in your life moreover I received the letter yesterday from your end. After reading it, I just want to tell you that I enjoyed a lot during my cookery classes in your academy because the chefs were really helpful ans well as they provide a lot of valuable information about food.

Since, I learned cooking from there I made numerous dishes at house like Italian, Chinese, French toast, Indian and many more furthermore, I also try to explore new recipes from your cookery booklet so that I can try them.

Overall, you are already providing very good knowledge and courses but I just want to suggest one thing that you need to teach students about how to make cuisines that people eat in the past times like cultural food by making them on stove not on induction so you can start an ancient food course in your school as well so that new generations also taste how people eat few years ago as well how they prepare that food at home.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: describing your enjoyment, detailing your cooking practice since the course, and suggesting a new course. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a course director. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention enjoying the chefs' help, you could have provided more specific details about a particular technique or dish that made the experience memorable. Similarly, the suggestion for an 'ancient food' course is a good idea, but the explanation of why this is valuable could be more clearly articulated to fully satisfy the requirements of a well-developed response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each focusing on one of the required points. You use some cohesive devices such as 'moreover', 'furthermore', and 'since', but these are sometimes used incorrectly or in a way that makes the flow feel mechanical. For instance, the transition 'moreover I received the letter' is slightly awkward in this context. Additionally, some sentences are quite long and run-on, which affects the clarity of the progression. Using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring they are used to connect ideas naturally rather than just as sentence starters would improve the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your ideas clearly. You use some relevant topic-specific vocabulary like 'cookery classes', 'recipes', and 'cuisines'. However, there is a lack of flexibility and precision. Phrases like 'doing well in your life' are overly informal and not standard for a professional letter. You also rely on basic descriptors like 'very good' and 'valuable information'. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and a wider range of vocabulary that demonstrates a better grasp of formal register.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Common issues include incorrect verb tenses (e.g., 'Since, I learned cooking from there I made' should be 'Since completing the course, I have made'), missing articles, and punctuation errors, such as the lack of commas in complex sentences. The sentence structure is often repetitive, relying on 'and' to join clauses. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and refining your use of complex sentence structures will significantly improve your accuracy and range.
