Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses all three bullet points: describing what was enjoyed, mentioning cooking frequency, and suggesting a new course. However, the development of these ideas is quite limited. For instance, the description of the course is repetitive, focusing heavily on 'cake' without providing specific details about the teaching style or atmosphere. The suggestion for a new course is clear but lacks depth. The inclusion of an unnecessary introductory paragraph that summarizes the task instructions rather than starting the letter directly is a weakness in task focus. To improve, you should expand on your experiences with more descriptive language and ensure the tone is consistently appropriate for a formal letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The letter lacks a clear logical progression. The paragraphing is inconsistent, with the introductory paragraph being redundant and the main body paragraphs lacking clear topic sentences. Cohesive devices are used very sparingly and often incorrectly, such as the repetitive use of 'in this course' and 'I really love it'. The transition between ideas is abrupt, making the text feel like a list of sentences rather than a cohesive letter. To improve, use a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in addition') and ensure that each paragraph focuses on a single, well-developed idea.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is basic and repetitive. Phrases like 'make many meals', 'new dishes', and 'different type of' are used frequently. There are also errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'tech me' (instead of 'teach me') and 'rat to this course' (likely meaning 'rate'). The range of vocabulary is insufficient to express ideas with precision or variety. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more specific culinary terminology and avoid repeating the same verbs and nouns throughout the text. Expanding your range of adjectives and adverbs would also help improve the quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are consistent issues with verb tenses (e.g., 'I recently join' instead of 'I recently joined'), subject-verb agreement, and sentence structure. Many sentences are fragmented or run-on, and the use of articles and prepositions is often inaccurate. For example, 'a one how to make different type of coffee make' is grammatically incoherent. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring consistent verb tenses, and proofreading for common errors like missing articles and incorrect word order.
