IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You recently did a short cookery course. The cookery school has asked for your feedback on this course. Write a letter to the course director at the cookery school. In your letter
- describe what you enjoyed about the course
- say how much cooking you've done since the course
- suggest another cookery course you’d like the school to offer
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr Brown,
I am writing to express my satisfaction after completing cookery course at your cookery school. It was pleasure to learn there for a month. During the course, I enjoyed learning vegetable cutting techniques and preparing Italian dishes.
Before joining the course, I did not even know how to chop vegetables properly. However after completing the course, I became confident in my vegetable cutting skills. Most importantly I learned how to prepare a variety of Italian dishes. Since completing the course, I have prepared many homemade Italian meals for my family such as Pizza, Spaghetti carbonara, and lasagna. My family was pleasantly surprised after tasting the delicious dishes I prepared, and they really enjoyed them.
I would really appreciate if you could also organise bakery workshop where we can learn how to make cakes, pastries, and cookies. I truly fascinated by desserts and the process of making them. I believe such such a workshop would be a wonderful addition to the course and would benefit many students.
Yours sincerely,
Bijal.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the enjoyment of learning cutting techniques and Italian cuisine, quantify your post-course cooking experience by mentioning specific dishes, and provide a relevant suggestion for a bakery workshop. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening salutation matches the prompt's instructions; you used 'Dear Mr Brown' instead of the required 'Dear Sir or Madam', which is a minor lapse in following specific task instructions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your narrative easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Most importantly', and 'Since completing the course' to link your sentences. While the flow is generally smooth, the transition between paragraphs could be slightly more sophisticated. The use of paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is coherent, making the letter easy to read and understand.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'pleasantly surprised' and 'wonderful addition' are used effectively. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and missing articles, such as 'It was pleasure' (should be 'a pleasure') and 'organise bakery workshop' (should be 'an organised bakery workshop'). You also used 'I truly fascinated', which is grammatically incorrect; it should be 'I am truly fascinated'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Expanding your range of collocations would further improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical slips, such as missing articles ('completing cookery course') and the incorrect verb form 'I truly fascinated'. Additionally, there is a repetition error in 'such such a workshop'. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the sentence structures are generally well-constructed. To improve, focus on proofreading for small grammatical omissions like articles and ensuring subject-verb agreement is consistent throughout your writing.
