Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear sir or madam,

I hope you are well. I am writing this letter to mention about the cookery course of baking which I completed recently at your school. I feel grateful and honoured to achieve my certificate from this school.

When I entered this course I had no knowledge of baking and I was afraid of baking. But the teaching and live sessions of cookery was top-notch as now I can prepare different baking cuisine like cakes, brownies and many others. One thing which I loved most was meeting sessions with the well known baking chefs and learning with them.

After finishing course I have been making some of my favourite dessert like Chocolate brownies and cheese cake at my home. I might start my own small shop of dessert. Also, I wanted to give you suggestion on starting the Sea-food cookery class, I would love to join that program. As Sea-food fascinates me, how incredible it looks after presenting it apart from taste.

Thank you for teaching me this skill and the time you spent reading my letter.

Yours faithfully,

XYZ

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described your enjoyment of the course, specifically mentioning the live sessions with chefs. You explained your post-course cooking activities, such as making brownies and cheesecake, and provided a clear suggestion for a seafood course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a course director. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your experience and your future interests. The letter is clearly structured, and the purpose is evident from the beginning.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'After finishing course' and 'Also', to link your ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences. For example, the transition between your future plans and the suggestion for a new course is a bit abrupt. Overall, the message is easy to follow and the paragraphing is appropriate.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to express your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'top-notch' and 'well known' are used effectively. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'mention about' (should be 'mention' or 'write about') and 'baking cuisine' (cuisine usually refers to a style of cooking, not specific baked goods). You also use 'presenting it' in a slightly awkward way when discussing seafood. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise terms for culinary techniques would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('finishing course' should be 'finishing the course') and issues with preposition usage ('mention about'). There are also some punctuation errors, such as the comma splice in 'dessert.Also,'. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, you should focus on improving your control over articles, prepositions, and sentence punctuation to ensure a more polished and professional tone.
