Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to provide feedback on the short cookery course that I recently completed at your school. Overall, I found the course very enjoyable and useful, and I would like to share my experience with you.
What I enjoyed most about the course was the practical nature of the lessons. Each session provided an opportunity to prepare a variety of dishes under the guidance of experienced instructors, which helped me improve my cooking skills significantly. I also appreciated the friendly atmosphere in the classroom, as it allowed participants to share ideas and learn from one another. In addition, the recipes were easy to follow and could be recreated at home using readily available ingredients.I would like the school to offer a baking and pastry course in the future. Many people are interested in learning how to make cakes, cookies, and desserts, and I believe such a course would be very popular among former and new students alike.
Thank you for considering my feedback. I look forward to hearing about future courses offered by your school.
Yours faithfully,
deval

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You described the practical nature of the lessons, mentioned your enjoyment of the atmosphere, and suggested a baking and pastry course. However, you missed one specific requirement: the prompt asked you to state how much cooking you have done since the course. This is a significant omission that prevents the response from being fully developed. To reach a higher band, ensure every instruction in the prompt is explicitly answered with supporting detail.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and 'Overall' to link ideas effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, though the transition between the feedback on the course and the suggestion for a new one could be smoother. Overall, the structure is clear and serves the purpose of the letter well.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'practical nature of the lessons' and 'readily available ingredients' are natural and appropriate for the context. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it lacks a wider range of less common or more sophisticated collocations that would be expected at a higher band level. The language is consistently appropriate for a formal letter to a course director.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
Your grammar is generally accurate, and you use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, 'Each session provided an opportunity to prepare a variety of dishes under the guidance of experienced instructors' is a well-constructed complex sentence. There are no significant errors that impede communication. To improve, you could incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice variations, to demonstrate greater grammatical flexibility.
