Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to provide a feedback regarding the cookery course which I completed last month from your school. Let me share a few thoughts with you.

I would like to mention, the cookery course which I just completed was amazing and I enjoyed a lot while learning. Firstly, the instructor was very helpful and he explained every process in detail and gave practical examples for all sessions. There were several dishes I learned in a short period of time such as butter chicken, rice pudding and so on.

To be honest, I am a foody person, after learning the cooking skills, I spend my most of the leisure time in the kitchen. I already make several Indian cuisines and served to my parents and freinds. They all are extremely happy with my cooking skills.

I would appreciate if you could offer other cookery classes, after mastering Indian cuisines, I would like to learn Chinese and Italian food. Let me know when you could add this courses in your school.

I would appreciate your time and consideration to the letter. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Parminder

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe what you enjoyed about the course, specifically mentioning the instructor's teaching style and the dishes learned. You also explain your post-course cooking habits and provide a clear suggestion for future course offerings. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a course director. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, instead of just listing dishes, you could briefly mention why those specific techniques were beneficial. Overall, the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'To be honest', and 'I would appreciate' to connect your thoughts. However, the transition between sentences could be smoother to improve the flow. Some of the linking phrases are a bit mechanical. Increasing the variety of cohesive devices would help elevate the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'leisure time', 'mastering', and 'consideration'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'provide a feedback' (should be 'provide feedback') and 'foody person' (should be 'foodie'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the more sophisticated or precise collocations that would characterize a higher band score. Focusing on more natural phrasing and avoiding minor errors in article usage or word forms will improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I already make' (should be 'I have already made'), 'this courses' (should be 'these courses'), and 'freinds' (spelling error). While these errors are present, they do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. To improve, try to ensure subject-verb agreement and correct pluralization consistently. Incorporating a wider variety of complex sentence structures would also help demonstrate better grammatical control.
