Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to share my experience about the one month accelerated culinary course I took this summer. I consider it as one of the amazing and thoughtfully designed programs at the university.

Out of all the modules classes offered in the course, I enjoyed 'Thai classes" most due to the different ingredients and recipes introduced in that class. I learned various things about South Asian cooking style in that class.

Since the completion of the program, I have managed to cook one dish every day to practice the skills I acquired through it. Moreover, I shared all these recipes and techniques to my cousin, who is eager to join the course in the upcoming semester.

I would recommend adding Carribean culinary to the program to attract more students. In the past few days, many Chefs have asked whether Carribean culinary is taught in it. I am thankful to all the multitalented instructors for working so hard and teaching me.

Sincerely,

James

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described your enjoyment of the Thai cooking module, explained your post-course practice, and provided a clear suggestion for a Caribbean culinary course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a course director. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing enough detail to satisfy the requirements of the task. The letter is well-structured and maintains a consistent focus on the purpose of the correspondence throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the information easy to follow. You have used some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'In the past few days' to link your ideas effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a letter format. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the transition between the description of the course and your personal practice is slightly smoother.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'thoughtfully designed programs' and 'multitalented instructors' demonstrate a good command of language. There are a few minor issues, such as the spelling of 'Carribean' (should be 'Caribbean') and the slightly awkward phrasing 'modules classes'. However, these do not impede communication. To improve, try to use more precise collocations and ensure consistent spelling of proper nouns throughout the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good control of grammar with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your punctuation is generally accurate. There are a few minor slips, such as 'shared all these recipes... to my cousin' (should be 'with my cousin') and 'Thai classes"' (inconsistent quotation marks). These are minor and do not affect the clarity of your writing. You have a solid foundation in grammatical accuracy, which allows your message to be communicated effectively.
