IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You recently did a short cookery course. The cookery school has asked for your feedback on this course. Write a letter to the course director at the cookery school. In your letter
- describe what you enjoyed about the course
- say how much cooking you've done since the course
- suggest another cookery course you’d like the school to offer
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Smith,
I would like to provide you the constructive feedback about a recently completed cookery course.
The course structure was well designed for people who never did a cooking before. The interesting part which I enjoyed the most was to taste each others food at the end of the each session.
I have been cooked 12 unique dishes until the course end. However, Indian curry which I made from cashew and onion was the most loved dish by other peers. Since the Thai food I cooked second day of session was not meet my expectation, I am planning to cook at home on next weekend.
I believe cookery course should start to provide recorded lectures. This would be the great source of revision resource. If attendees do not get chance for a cooking long period of time, they resume in future by watching the videos.
I hope my feedback can helpful to your school.
Yours faithfully,
Sahil

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You described what you enjoyed (tasting food), mentioned your cooking practice since the course, and suggested a new course format (recorded lectures). However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the suggestion for recorded lectures is a bit brief and could have been expanded by explaining how it would benefit the school's reputation or student engagement. Additionally, the salutation 'Dear Smith' is inappropriate for a formal letter; 'Dear Sir or Madam' was provided in the prompt, and 'Dear Mr/Ms [Surname]' would be standard. Overall, the response covers the requirements but lacks the depth expected for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'However' and 'Since', to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'The interesting part which I enjoyed the most was to taste each others food'. The transition between the second and third paragraph is a bit abrupt. To improve, ensure that your sentences flow more naturally into one another and use a wider variety of linking words to connect your ideas more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your ideas clearly. You use some relevant topic-specific vocabulary like 'cookery course', 'revision resource', and 'attendees'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'provide you the constructive feedback' (should be 'provide you with') and 'cooking long period of time' (should be 'cooking for a long period'). The range is sufficient to complete the task, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally impede the flow, such as 'people who never did a cooking before' (should be 'had never cooked before'), 'I have been cooked' (should be 'I have cooked'), and 'was not meet my expectation' (should be 'did not meet'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are frequent enough to suggest a lack of control over complex structures. Focusing on verb tense consistency and article usage will help improve your accuracy.
