Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter to provide my feedback on the cookery course that I completed last month.

At the beginning, I was bit confused about cooking as I entered in the course as a fresher. Later, when I started cooking along with the knowledge from theoretical modules in the course, then I became confident that I can select this field for my future prospect. I actually enjoyed the course especially the classes in a restaurant kitchen where we had to work in a fast-paced environment in real work situations.

Right after the completion of my course, I applied for the job in a reputed hotel in Toronto and secured a position as a Chef, therefore, I cook almost everyday when I am working. Even when I am off from work, I love cooking some special cuisines for my family and relatives. Cooking has actually become my passion these days.

By working here in Toronto, I witnessed that demand for bakery products is increasing because many celebrate their special events with their loved ones and they prefer ordering cake, bread and pizza from restaurants. Hence, I would like to suggest if a course with bakery specialization can be offered to students as it provides greater opportunities for job or business.

I am extremely happy that I could find my dream gig right after finishing my classes under this course.

Yours faithfully,

Rajwinder Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly described your enjoyment of the practical kitchen experience, provided a detailed update on your current professional cooking activities, and offered a logical suggestion for a bakery-focused course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a course director. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of providing feedback. You have maintained a consistent focus throughout the letter, and the purpose of your writing is clear from the opening paragraph to the conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your narrative easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'At the beginning', 'Later', 'Right after', and 'Hence' to link your thoughts effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of your feedback. The flow between sentences is generally smooth, and the overall structure is coherent, meeting the requirements for a well-organized piece of correspondence.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the context, such as 'theoretical modules', 'fast-paced environment', 'reputed hotel', and 'specialization'. There is an attempt to use less common items, and your word choice is generally accurate. While there are some minor phrasing issues, such as 'dream gig' (which is slightly informal for a formal letter) and 'I witnessed that demand', the meaning is always clear. You show a sufficient range to convey your ideas with precision and flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'I was bit confused' (missing 'a'), 'entered in the course' (unnecessary preposition), and 'applied for the job' (should be 'a job'). However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and you demonstrate good control over punctuation and sentence construction. The use of complex sentences, such as 'Even when I am off from work, I love cooking...', shows a good command of grammar.
