IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You recently did a short cookery course. The cookery school has asked for your feedback on this course. Write a letter to the course director at the cookery school. In your letter
- describe what you enjoyed about the course
- say how much cooking you've done since the course
- suggest another cookery course you’d like the school to offer
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to apprise you of the fact that I have successfully completed the cookery course from your esteemed school and wanted to provide my feedback as requested in the email that I received yesterday from the administrative department.
Although it was a short course, I was able to gain copious knowledge about modern cookery. I was fascinated by teaching methods and the doubt clearing sessions at the end made a significant difference in understanding and learning. Overall it was an enjoyable experience as I was able to learn advance techniques to design the bone china cookery in a fun and interactive way.
Ever since I passed the program, I have painted umpteen cookery at my home. Moreover, I have also made several lip-smacking dishes which were served in the newly painted cookery and enjoyed them with my family. They were extremely happy to see me making delicious dishes.
I would like to suggest that you should again offer the cookery course in the fall semester, but this time instead of using bone china, you should follow the latest trend and use cookery made from recycled material.
Hoping to join the session soon.
Yours faithfully,
Achin Pal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You described your enjoyment of the teaching methods, mentioned your cooking practice since the course, and suggested a new course topic. However, there is a significant misunderstanding regarding the word 'cookery'. You consistently use 'cookery' as a noun for the physical object (e.g., 'design the bone china cookery' and 'painted umpteen cookery'), whereas 'cookery' refers to the art or practice of cooking. This misuse makes parts of your response confusing and slightly off-topic, as it sounds like you are describing painting pottery rather than cooking food. Despite this, the letter format and tone are appropriate.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each bullet point, and a formal closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'Moreover', and 'Ever since' to link your ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, although the confusion regarding the term 'cookery' occasionally disrupts the clarity of the message. Overall, the structure is sound and supports the reader's understanding of your feedback.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, including phrases like 'esteemed school', 'copious knowledge', and 'lip-smacking'. However, the persistent misuse of the word 'cookery' as a synonym for 'pottery' or 'dishes' significantly impacts your score. 'Cookery' is an uncountable noun referring to the skill of cooking, not a physical item you can paint or use to serve food. This is a recurring lexical error that hinders precision. While you attempt to use more sophisticated language, the lack of awareness regarding the correct collocation and meaning of 'cookery' limits your ability to convey your ideas accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing this letter to apprise you of the fact that...' and 'Although it was a short course, I was able to...'. Most of your sentences are grammatically sound, and your punctuation is generally accurate. There are minor errors, such as 'I have painted umpteen cookery' (which should be plural or a different noun) and 'I was fascinated by teaching methods' (missing an article 'the'). However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede the overall communication of your message.
