Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to give feedback on the cookery course that I completed recently at your institute.

Having cooking competition on saturdays and getting prizes was the best part that I really enjoyed during my course. In addition, instructors are too cooperative that I was never scared of asking them any question about the difficulties that I was facing during the session.

Since I finished the course, I do cooking everyday. My mother I really happy that I did this course as her workload declined. I prepare breakfast as well as dinner for my family members that allow them to try different dishes everyday.

I really appreciate if school will offer program for Italian food because there is no academy in the city that offer Italian food course. Additionally, I know abundant individuals who are really excited to join this course. I hope you will bring this course soon.

Your faithfully,

Prabhjot Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: describing the enjoyable aspects of the course, stating how much you have cooked since, and suggesting a new course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention the cooking competitions, you could have elaborated more on why they were enjoyable or what specific skills you gained. Similarly, the suggestion for an Italian course is clear, but providing a brief reason why this specific cuisine would be popular at the school would have strengthened your argument. Overall, the response is relevant and fulfills the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific part of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Since I finished', and 'Additionally' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. For instance, the transition in the second paragraph could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some minor improvements in the variety of linking words would help the text flow more naturally. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'institute', 'cooperative', and 'abundant'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'I do cooking everyday' (should be 'I cook every day') and 'My mother I really happy' (a grammatical slip). While you attempt to use some less common vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. The vocabulary used is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Having cooking competition' (should be 'Having cooking competitions'), 'instructors are too cooperative that I was never scared' (should be 'so cooperative that...'), and 'I really appreciate if school will offer' (should be 'I would really appreciate if the school offered'). These errors are noticeable but do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, the correct use of articles, and the consistent use of conditional tenses when making suggestions. Increasing the variety of complex sentence forms would also enhance your score.
